Speech and Language Therapy Assistant

As a Speech and Language Therapy Assistant you will be working under the supervision of a qualified Speech and Language Therapist and you will have the chance to expand your knowledge in evidence based practice and guidelines.

Your contribution to service development initiatives and quality improvement projects will be valued, with opportunities to receive regular supervision.

What you will be doing

You will be evaluating service user's individual speech and languages treatment plans, leading 1-1's and therapeutic group sessions with service users who have cognitive and communication impairments and analysing clinical audit data for service users.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Following department guidelines and standards to independently support the work of SLT's e.g. jointly planning and running therapy groups.
  • Completing mealtime observations of swallowing safety with patients who have swallowing difficulties and cognitive feeding impairments.
  • Supporting patients with communication and swallowing difficulties during community activities.
  • Preparing personalised materials to support therapeutic interventions.
  • Demonstrating communication strategies to families and carers, including the use of high- and low-tech communication aids.
  • Providing clinical administrative support to SLT's, including data collection and analysis.

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have experience working in a care or therapy environment.
  • Be able to understand and follow instructions accurately and to learn new skills quickly.
  • Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be computer literate: ability to use Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality and implication of non- compliance.
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to work with patients with behaviours that challenge.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the impact of complex brain injury on a patient's communication, cognition, and swallowing

Location: The Avalon Centre, Edison Park Hindle Way, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN3 3RT

You will be working at The Avalon Centre, a purpose built neurological centre for men and women over the age of 18 years, who have an acquired brain injury

The centre has been designed specifically to support people who, because of their injury, have challenging and complex needs and require a neurobehavioral rehabilitation programme.
