Assistant Cook

What we are looking for:

As an Assistant Cook you will be working under the supervision of the Cook to prepare and serve meals to children and staff in a school lunch service environment. Working in schools in and around the borough, roles are part-time and term-time only, as such the working hours of these roles can be ideal for those wishing to fit work around school drop-off/pick-up or other responsibilities.

This role will be mid-level supervisory and will report to the Cook. However, in the absence of the Cook or when needed you will use your knowledge, skills and experience and be able to provide instruction and direction to the team of Food Service Assistants to ensure service continuity. There is the potential to work with key stakeholders (such as school staff) and to lead the team when needed. This is a great opportunity for someone with some commercial kitchen experience who is looking to step up and develop their leadership and supervisory skills.

Duties:

  • Assist the Cook Supervisor to ensure all aspects of the kitchen run smoothly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Assist with stock control, food storage, and preparation to ensure the delivery of high-quality, nutritional hot and cold meals and snacks.
  • Maintain high standards of food hygiene, health and safety.
  • Ensure efficiency and great service delivery at all times.
  • Prepare a range of meals in line with agreed ingredients and recipes using commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Carry out stock control and possibly handle cashier/cash handling and reporting responsibilities.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum of Food Hygiene Level 2 qualification.
  • A qualification (such as City & Guilds or NVQ) in Hospitality & Catering /Food Safety/Food Preparation & Service, highly desirable.
  • Great teamwork skills to ensure smooth and efficient meal service, especially under time pressure.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of food allergens and cross-contamination principles.
  • Additional food industry qualifications and experience are advantageous.
  • Prior experience in a commercial kitchen in a similar environment is preferable.

Working Arrangements:

  • Working pattern: 20 - 25 hours per week, Monday to Friday (Term time only).
  • Location: You will be allocated to a site(s) in and around the Borough.
  • Other: An enhanced DBS check will be required for this role.
