Interim Financial Controller (Academy Trust)

RM Recruit are working with a North Birmingham based Multi Academy Trust to recruit an Interim Financial Controller for their team. This role will commence in September, have hybrid working in place and will have an initial duration of 3 months. The Trust is seeking an accounting professional who can demonstrate hands on experience in a Multi Academy Trust seeking.

Reporting into the CFO, your duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Production of management accounts for all academies and the central function playing a key role in monitoring budgets
  • Managing and developing the monthly management reporting and ensuring robust budget management across the academies accessing the central finance service.
  • Ensuring robust financial management is in place across the Trust in accordance with ESFA guidelines along with the Academies Financial Handbook (AFH) and the Trust financial policies.
  • Supporting the CFO with preparation of statutory financial returns and the preparation of the Trust's annual budgets
  • Ensuring all financial reconciliations are undertaken in a timely manner.
  • Monitor changes in financial regulations and undertaking any necessary training to ensure that the best financial practices are followed
  • Via delegation, ensure all bank accounts including investment accounts, petty cash and credit card(s), are reconciled on a monthly basis.
  • Be responsible for ensuring that financial systems reflect the latest accurate position for month-end and year-end finalisation.
  • Ensure that the academies remain compliant with VAT requirements, including completion and submission of VAT returns in line with HMRC guidelines.
  • Provide accurate information for cash-flow forecasts as required to support the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Complete returns and claims to external bodies including the Education & Skills Funding Agency, HMRC, etc. under the guidance of the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Oversee and ensure that School Fund financial arrangements are in order and reconciled.
  • Monitor the Trusts financial position and produce monthly management information for review by the Senior Management Teams
  • Ensure the financial information underpinning the monthly management reports is prepared in line with best practice.
  • Ensure that accurate management accounts (including income & expenditure and balance sheet) and other reports and KPI's are produced in accordance with the Trust's requirements.
  • Identify and inform the Chief Operating Officer of the cause of any significant variance to budget.
  • Support the preparation of the individual academies and the Trust's annual budgets and the preparation of financial returns for submission to the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA.)

The Trust is willing to consider Part Qualified/QBE applications providing the sector experience is held.
