Principal/Lead Ecologist

Your new role

You will oversee all ecological aspects of projects, ensuring best practices are integrated throughout processes to deliver high-quality work. You will assist in preparing competitive bids and tenders, manage site surveys, and approve proposals and reports for both technical robustness and branding.
Role responsibilities may include:

  • Providing specialist ecological knowledge to team members.
  • Managing large and complex projects.
  • Advising clients on safeguarding ecology on various commercial sites and best practices.
  • Creating habitat surveys, bat surveys, and generating commercially presentable reports for clients.
  • Very rarely conducting surveys and ensuring relevant paperwork is completed and submitted according to company policy.
  • Managing on-site ecological issues, including the relocation of animals (where appropriate licenses are in place) and advising on best practices if protected species are identified, offering mitigation or alternative working methods where appropriate.
  • Creating RAMS and ensuring suitable resources are in place for ecologically sensitive works, advising colleagues on other site works where necessary.
  • Analyzing, evaluating, interpreting, and presenting ecological data.
  • Writing technical reports, including preliminary ecological appraisal reports, ecological impact assessments, and protected species license applications.
  • Designing habitats for creation and conservation projects.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Experience in managing large and complex projects in the ecology sector within a professional consultancy company.
  • A passion for inspiring and mentoring team members.
  • A thorough understanding of UK survey methodology, relevant legislation, guidelines, and best practices.
  • Experience conducting preliminary ecological appraisals (PEA), protected species surveys, and/or habitat surveys.
  • Report writing experience, including PEA reports, Ecological Impact Assessments, HRAs, and protected species licenses.
  • A degree in Ecology, Environmental or Earth Sciences, or a related discipline.
  • CIEEM membership.
  • A current and full driving license, with a willingness to travel to sites when necessary.
