Lawyer - Quality of Decision Maker

About the role Reporting to the Senior Lawyer in the Quality of Decision Making team (QDM), the purpose of this role is to support high quality decision making throughout the Fitness to Practise (FtP) process.

You will provide legal advice and support that enables the Assistant Registrars in the QDM team to carry out high quality, clear, robust and legally sound reviews of screening and case examiner decisions, and to decide on Agreed Removal applications, escalating issues to the Senior Lawyer where necessary.

You will provide legal advice to the Quality of Decision Making team to ensure that cases are dealt with appropriately and efficiently.

You will support the Senior Lawyer in identifying learning and areas for improvement in decisions made by screening decision makers, case examiners and independent fitness to practise panels. You will support the Senior Lawyer in contributing to training planning and delivery for decision makers throughout the fitness to practise process.

About You

You will have:
1. Experience as a qualified solicitor or barrister, preferably in the field of professional regulation.
2. Proven experience of providing appropriate legal advice to decision makers and stakeholders.
3. An understanding of public law principles and ability to apply case law.
4. Sound knowledge of criminal and/or civil and/or regulatory law practice and procedures.
5. Relevant casework experience, preferably in regulatory law.
6. Proven experience of advising decision makers and supporting the drafting of high quality decisions.
7. Proven experience of providing clear and high quality legal advice.
8. Highly developed ability to pay close attention to detail and quality assure own work and the work of others.
9. A strong commitment to high standards of service delivery and excellent customer care.
10. Excellent oral, written and presentation skills.
11. The ability to work in a team and individually.

Our Pay Policy
It is expected that staff new to the NMC will ordinarily be appointed to the bottom of the relevant pay band. However in exceptional circumstances, it may be possible to offer a salary above the bottom of the relevant pay band but we may request proof of current earnings. Please note that we offer an annual review of salaries and adopt a generous progressive pay approach. Further details of which are available on request.
