Trainee Child Wellbeing Practitioner

This is an exciting opportunity to train as a CWP whilst in employment with Ormiston Families as part of the Supporting Smiles Team working across Norfolk.

The successful candidates will undertake training at University College London (UCL) alongside working in service for Ormiston Families. You will be trained in the delivery of evidence based 'guided self-help' interventions for children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties. Trainees will use their newly developed skills to support children and young people who are referred into Supporting Smiles and will receive regular supervision to support their professional development.

We are excited about this next phase of development in the Children's Wellbeing Practitioner pathway and hold a clear vision on our aim to offer accessible, timely and evidence based CWP interventions to the young people and families in Norfolk and Waveney.

Experience of working with children and young people who have experienced mental health difficulties is essential. The post requires a minimum of a second-class bachelor's degree from a UK university or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard in a relevant subject (e.g. psychology), or relevant professional experience in CYP Mental Health/Education/Mentorship.

This role will be based at the Norwich HUB, which expectation as the course progresses to work within the community across Norfolk.

Responsibilities of a Trainee CWP:

  • Assess and deliver, under supervision outcome focused, evidence-based interventions to children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties within the community
  • Working in partnership, support children and young people experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties and their families in the self-management of presenting difficulties
  • Work in partnership with children, young people and families in the development of plans for the intervention and agreed outcomes
  • Support and empower children, young people and families to make informed choices about the intervention
  • Regularly undertake the planning, delivery, and implementation of participation activities in service and in the community.
  • On occasion, prepare and deliver training sessions to professional groups within service and in the community and evaluate the impact and outcomes of such training sessions.
  • Contribute to networking and building close working relationships with community groups and organisations to improve access to psychological support and enhance the overall impact of CWP role within in the community.
  • Operate at all times from an inclusive values base, which recognises and respects diversity.
  • Accept referrals within agreed national and local protocols
  • Undertakes accurate assessment of risk to self and others
  • Adhere to the service referral protocols. Under supervision signpost unsuitable referrals to the relevant service as necessary.
  • Through close case management and supervision, escalate cases where the level of need becomes beyond scope, or more severe ensuring adherence to other relevant elements of service delivery

Skills and experience of a Trainee CWP:

  • Undergraduate degree, upper second class or above, in Psychology OR related subject (e.g., Psychology, Education, Childhood development, Social Work etc), OR any subject with further training or experience in a relevant field (e.g., Teaching/TA; Learning Support; HCA; Youth Work; Counselling etc)

OR relevant professional experience in CYP Mental Health/Education/Mentorship (to be considered on a case-by-case basis)

  • Previous experience of working with children and young people
  • Ability to study as a self-motivated learner and implement training with appropriate support
  • Demonstrates high standards in written and verbal communication
  • Ability to personally manage a sensitive, traumatic and potentially emotionally distressing caseload.
  • Able to travel to meet post requirements
