NOC Engineer

The NOC Engineer role is working with our client is a leading fibre alternative network (alt net) provider, dedicated to delivering high-speed and reliable internet services to underserved areas. Founded in 2013, our client has become an industry leader, providing UK businesses with super high bandwidth gigabit connectivity and broadband via a vibrant and dynamic wholesale and reseller partner programme. A significant milestone was reached in early 2020 when a UK investment giant injected £160M into the business to fast-track full-fibre rollout plans. Since then, deploying a further £115M investment, they have built the network to pass nearly 450,000 UK business premises, with an ambition to pass 1 million in the next few years, building social value and making a difference for future generations.

Role Overview:

As a NOC Engineer (2nd/3rd Line), you will play a critical role in maintaining the health and performance of our client's network. You will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving complex network issues, managing escalations from both internal and external customers, and ensuring optimal network performance. Your expertise in network protocols and infrastructure will be pivotal in maintaining the high standards our client upholds.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Incident Management:

  • Respond to escalated incidents from the 1st Line support team and external customers.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex network issues, ensuring timely resolution.
  • Escalate unresolved incidents to 3rd Line support or relevant teams as needed.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement solutions to prevent recurrence of issues.

2. Network Monitoring:

  • Monitor and maintain the health of the network infrastructure using various tools and systems.
  • Proactively identify potential issues and implement preventive measures.
  • Analyze network traffic and performance metrics to detect anomalies.

3. Maintenance and Upgrades:

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks, including software and hardware upgrades.
  • Implement and manage network configurations, ensuring compliance with company standards.
  • Configure and manage network devices, including routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Coordinate with field engineers for on-site support and maintenance activities.

4. Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed documentation of incidents, resolutions, and network changes.
  • Generate regular reports on network performance and incident trends.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of NOC procedures and guidelines.
  • Document and communicate network changes and updates to relevant stakeholders.

5. Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with the 1st Line support team to provide guidance and training.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to ensure seamless integration and operation of network services.
  • Participate in team meetings and provide updates on ongoing issues and projects.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior NOC engineers.
  • Participate in on-call rotation to provide 24/7 network support.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a NOC or network support role.
  • Strong understanding of network protocols (TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, MPLS, etc.) and technologies (Ethernet, MPLS, VPN, etc.).
  • Proficiency in using network monitoring and management tools (e.g., Nagios, SolarWinds, PRTG).
  • Experience with network equipment from vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, and Huawei.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, JNCIA, JNCIS) are highly desirable.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with fiber optic networks and broadband technologies.
  • Knowledge of Linux/Unix systems and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash).
  • Familiarity with ITIL framework and best practices.
  • Hands-on experience with network automation and scripting.
  • Experience in a telecommunications or ISP environment.
