The opportunity:

We have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Associate to join our Crime & Regulatory team in Manchester. We are looking for an accomplished Regulatory Lawyer with a proven history of technical expertise. The crime and regulatory team work for insurers representing large charities, public sector organisations SME's and individuals in a range of regulatory disputes. The team's clients usually (but not always) benefit from an insurance or affinity relationship. The team undertakes work in:

  • Professional discipline
  • CQC/Ofsted work including first tier tribunal
  • Health, safety, environmental, transport
  • Inquests
  • Public law including public inquiries and judicial review litigation
  • Healthcare crime
  • Interviews under caution

Markel Law LLP (Markel Law) is an independent SRA authorised and regulated legal business offering services to both insured and non-insured clients. Our clients and business partners comprise businesses, high net worth individuals, and associations across a broad spectrum of industries.

We operate out of offices in Manchester, Leeds, London and Croydon and employ over 60 specialist solicitors. Our legal teams guide, support, defend and protect clients through a wide range of key legal services.

What you'll be doing:

  • Handle your own case load - including recommending reserves and setting strategies
  • Deliver billing and other key performance indicators
  • Be able to establish, develop and maintain corporate and individual client relationships - both internally and externally
  • Be able to supervise paralegals on some smaller files and delegate tasks to junior colleagues / administrative support staff where necessary and appropriate
  • Work within an established team of lawyers, paralegals, a trainee solicitor and administrative support
  • Provide both contentious and non-contentious legal advice representing businesses and individuals in an insured and uninsured capacity
  • Be able to consider and advise upon insurance policy coverage issues where necessary

Our must haves:

  • Be an experienced regulatory lawyer with a demonstrable history of technical expertise - Advocacy experience is an advantage!
  • Have previous experience of dealing with insurance claims would be helpful (in particular, legal expenses insurance claims and / or liability insurance claims) and may well come from an established insurance-focused firm or team. Experience of some criminal litigation is preferable, but not necessarily essential
  • Previous legal (insurance) experience is a bonus
  • Have experience of client management and practice development
  • Be able to demonstrate technical excellence
  • Have some business following or some business development experience, although this is preferable rather than a prerequisite
  • Be expected to develop and bring in new business to the department
  • Have knowledge of legal/insurance relationships and their interaction
  • Demonstrate first class client care and communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Have high attention to detail and accurate case management skills
  • Demonstrate positive and co-operative interaction with team members
