Behaviour Lead

Milk Education are looking for a dedicated and resilient Behaviour Lead to work on a long-term supply basis with a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Sunderland. This role offers a unique opportunity to support young people who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion from mainstream education. As a Behaviour Lead in this setting, you will play a crucial role in helping students overcome barriers to learning, re-engage with education, and develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed.

Behaviour Lead role and responsibilities:

Provide tailored support to students in small groups or on a one-to-one basis, addressing their academic, social, and emotional needs.

  • Lead on behaviour management strategies, supporting staff and students across the unit.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students, helping them to feel safe, supported, and motivated.
  • Support students in managing their behaviour, developing coping strategies, and making positive choices.
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and other staff to monitor student progress and adapt support as needed.
  • Help to create a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.
  • Assist with classroom management and the implementation of behaviour management strategies.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and contribute to the development of individualized student support plans.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and behaviour, ensuring timely communication with relevant staff and parents.

Behaviour Lead Non-Negotiables:

  • HLTA qualification
  • Experience working with young people, particularly those with challenging behaviour or social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students who may be disengaged or vulnerable.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to supporting the development and well-being of young people.
  • Ability to remain calm and positive in challenging situations and to de-escalate conflicts effectively.
  • A flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to work as part of a team and independently when required.
  • Understanding of safeguarding practices and a commitment to promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualifications or training in areas such as behaviour management, youth work, or special educational needs (SEN).
  • Experience working in a PRU, AP, or similar educational setting.
  • Knowledge of therapeutic approaches, such as restorative practices or trauma-informed care.
