VAT Manager

VAT Manager - c.£65k + bonus - Hybrid working (50% working from home/reporting to Birmingham office).

The purpose of the role is to manage and control VAT client work including the review and preparation of VAT returns. You will undertake detailed planning and implementation of VAT work, ensuring the provision of an effective and cost driven service to clients in line with budgets. Together with Partners, you will manage the interface between a group of clients and the firm to ensure that the agreed expectations of the clients in terms of service, quality and cost and also the firm's targets are met.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring clients' VAT affairs comply with statutory time limits, and managing compliance work efficiently, profitably and in accordance with the firm's tax manual.
  • Identifying and advising on VAT planning opportunities and undertaking specialist technical assignments as required.
  • Responding to clients' correspondence as a matter of priority, and keeping the client and partner fully informed of the current status of the VAT work.
  • Acting as the principal point of contact to clients on VAT queries and maintaining excellent client service always.
  • Ensuring appropriate liaison takes place with other departments.
  • Monitoring work in progress reports, to ensure the profitable recoverability of work done and to bill clients on a timely basis.
  • Developing an advanced level of technical knowledge through appropriate reading and courses and an awareness of the firm's services, brochures and publications.
  • Identifying, interviewing and converting prospective clients and assisting other departments in the research and preparation of formal proposals for new work.
  • Taking an active involvement in prospective client seminars and effectively following up contacts made.
  • Assisting in review and quality control procedures and the administration of the department where required.
  • Attending staff meetings and training as required.
  • Carrying out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job, the title of the role and its grading, as requested by the line manager or Head of Department.

  • Preferably CTA / ATII qualified or equivalent, ideally with an accounting qualification such as ACA or ACCA.
  • Proven experience in client handling and project management.
  • Proven tax experience in producing high quality work within budget.
