Student Support Officer - Mental Health

We are seeking a dedicated Mental Health Student Support Officer to provide specialist support to students experiencing mental health difficulties. This role involves offering effective information, support, assessment, and referrals, as well as advising staff on recognising and supporting students with mental health challenges. The successful candidate will work closely with academic teams and other support staff to ensure a comprehensive package of support for students.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Accept and assess referrals, providing one-to-one support as needed.
  • Support students with common mental health problems in self-management while at college.
  • Identify and manage risks to self or others among the student population.
  • Make decisions on referral suitability and manage ongoing caseloads efficiently.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary meetings and provide advice to staff and partner organisations.
  • Promote healthy mental wellbeing and contribute to the development of best practices within the service.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to GDPR and confidentiality policies.
  • Keep up-to-date with health recommendations, guidelines, and policies.
  • Provide welfare support, act as a designated safeguarding officer, and assess applications for financial support.
  • Engage in the delivery of group tutorials, promotional activities, and enrolment processes.
  • Offer professional advice on health-related issues and actively participate in the full range of Student Support Services.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience in a similar role, preferably within an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of mental health legislation, policies, and best practices.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a caseload effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and safeguarding within the college environment.
  • Willingness to undertake staff development and training as required.
