Cornerstone is a leading social care charity based in Scotland. Established in 1980, Cornerstone provides a wide range of care and support services to individuals with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, and other support needs. Their mission is to enable the people they support to enjoy a valued life, focusing on promoting independence, inclusion, and well-being.

The Head of Finance is responsible for ensuring accurate, reliable, and timely financial information and analysis to support the entire organisation. This includes preparing monthly financial reports and written performance analyses, developing new reporting tools as needed, and assisting in the preparation of annual budgets, monitoring reports, forecasts, and annual accounts.

As a member of the Senior Leadership Team and Finance Team, the Head of Finance contributes to the delivery of the organisation's strategic, operational, and departmental plans. The role is varied and encompasses many aspects within the Finance Department, requiring flexibility to provide professional support and service across the organisation. The candidate will live within a reasonable commute to one of Cornerstone's three main offices (Aberdeen, Glasgow or Dundee).

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all finance department activities, ensuring alignment with strategic and operational plans.
  • Manage the timely production of accurate financial information, including management accounts with narrative and variance analysis.
  • Review and reconcile all balance sheet accounts quarterly, reporting potential risks and opportunities to senior management.
  • Investigate and report key variances in management accounts, providing explanations to managers and budget holders.
  • Lead the preparation of annual budgets and plans, including income, expenditure, salary budgets, balance sheets, and cash flow forecasts.
  • Prepare annual accounts and documentation for audits, ensuring compliance with charitable and financial legislation.
  • Generate and report on key performance metrics, including cash flow forecasting and financial analysis.
  • Develop processes for grant and contract management, ensuring robust financial management.
  • Provide financial support for tender submissions, contract reviews, and compliance.
  • Innovate and improve systems, policies, and procedures using new technology and reporting tools.
  • Oversee payroll, ensuring compliance with legislation, pensions auto-enrolment, PAYE, and year-end HMRC returns.
  • Ensure timely submission of all external reports, including Companies House, HMRC, and OSCR.
  • Lead cash flow and treasury management, ensuring sufficient cash availability and proper management of restricted expenditure.
  • Contribute to developing the financial controls framework, including policies, procedures, training, and monitoring.
  • Manage restricted grants and income, ensuring compliance with funders' requirements.
  • Assist the DOF in preparing and delivering strategic and operational plans and developing KPI's for the departmental plan.
  • Support the DOF in preparing and delivering the department's operational plan and KPI's, ensuring effective monitoring.

Requirements

The Head of Finance position requires an experienced finance professional with at least 3 years of post-qualification experience.

  • A relevant professional qualification (CA/ACA/ACCA/CIMA or equivalent).
  • Expertise in developing and maintaining financial controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong analytical and evaluation skills, capable of performing complex numerical and financial calculations and data analysis.
  • Meticulous attention to detail, ensuring accurate, reliable, and timely outputs while maintaining a strategic perspective.
  • Ability to identify and implement quality processes and procedures, with clear communication skills both verbally and in writing.
  • Strategic thinking with the ability to translate strategy into operational and departmental work plans.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, able to build relationships and communicate with staff at all levels.
  • Strong organisational skills, capable of planning and managing work to meet tight deadlines and handle multiple initiatives.
  • Experience in developing, managing, and leading a finance team to deliver high-quality performance and service.
  • Experience in supporting organisational change and implementing new finance systems.

Remuneration

Salary: £61,597
