SSEN Transmission, part of the SSE Group, is recruiting for a Marine Consents Manager (MCM) within the consents and environment team.

The key duties & responsibilities will include:

  • Successful applicants will be responsible for developing and consenting some of the most significant subsea cable infrastructure in Europe, working at the leading edge of project development, consenting and environmental management. Your role in delivering electricity transmission infrastructure, in turn, will help shape the future of the UK and Europe's energy transmission infrastructure and being a key part in delivering the UK's 2030 goals.
  • The Marine Consents and Environment team work on a range of projects from short interisland cables in the Orkney and Shetland islands to several hundred-kilometre long HVDC systems and offshore substations and platforms. The size and complexity of project and the level of autonomy allocated to each MCM will be commensurate with their experience and will increase as their experience grows.
  • Alongside the development and consenting of subsea cables, the Marine Consent Managers lead on the development of marine habitat restoration projects. SSENT has committed to a 10% biodiversity net gain across all its projects and the MCM will support the business ambitions of delivering these projects.
  • Applicants considering the MCM role will have a detailed understanding of the marine environment and the systems and species within it. They will have experience of the subsea cable or offshore renewables sectors, including site selection, consenting and installation processes, and detailed knowledge of regulatory regimes and legislation applicable to Scottish waters. They will be competent in drafting and reviewing reports and impact assessments and will be competent in commissioning and undertaking work to EIA standards. The ability to interpret marine survey data and associated technical reporting and how they relate to marine habitats. Experience in internal ISO compliant environmental auditing is valued.

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • A very strong understanding of marine legislation, its purpose and how it interacts with offshore development. You should be able to assess a project from initial design and determine how to licence each project stage and be able to independently manage this process with regulatory stakeholders.
  • Communicating: Everyone communicates differently. You should be able to communicate clearly and concisely to a range of stakeholders across various disciplines and have the confidence to challenge project team members at different seniority levels.
  • The ability to think critically and plan strategically: utilising personal and team experience to support a project, assessing information and determining its value and importance.
  • Demonstratable experience working in the marine environment industry through appropriate academic background or practical work experience.
  • Marine data: Good understanding of marine survey data such as bathymetry, side-scan sonar and sub-bottom profiling and how to interpret these in relation to marine habitats, protected features and impact mitigation.
  • Marine works take place 24 hrs a day 365 days a year, a commitment to be available when marine operations are taking place is required; an on-call system is in place to support this. As such, travel is required, occasionally at short notice, to attend work sites and vessels with potential for working in offshore environments.
