Design Engineer - Mechanical

Purpose of the Role:&

To& be responsible for designing and developing mechanical components within the ePowertrain department.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create and develop ePowertrain components from initial concepts to prototype and production, ensuring key functional attributes such as weight, packaging for sub-system, system, and vehicle, cost, quality, and Design for Manufacturing (DfM) and Design for Assembly (DfA).
  • Define and manage the deliverables for each component, including delivery timing (design, manufacturing, and testing lead times), DFMEA, PFMEA, DV and PV plans, supplier sourcing options, and supplier management.
  • Sub-system and System Contributions: Contribute to wider sub-system and system DFMEAs and PFMEAs.
  • Design Standards: Capture and author design standards and best practices unique to AML designs and applications.
  • Support the delivery of ePowertrain systems and commodities strategy.
  • Present status at Gateways and support ePowertrain design reviews, AML Package Meetings, and ePowertrain meetings.
  • Work cross-functionally with other R&D departments to define and balance characteristics to achieve system and vehicle requirements.
  • Support all virtual verification activities, including packaging, 1D, and 3D analyses.
  • Coordinate system and supplier comparison studies and evaluate RFQ responses to influence management decisions.
  • Complete Change Tracking Documents, Engineering Release Notices, and Releases to allow engineering changes to be approved by AML.
  • Resolve engineering concerns (using eCMS) in a timely fashion.
  • Support the Intellectual Property (IP) team to protect AML-generated IP.
  • Acquire and evaluate competitor benchmark information to influence concept creation in early project phases.
  • A good communicator who can work with both internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience:&

  • Excellent user of CAD (NX preferred) to design ePowertrain components including but not limited to: HV Battery components (Housings, base plates, bus bars, modules), EDU components (Housings, gears, shafts).
  • Skills in design processes such as: casting, sheet metal, injection moulding, extrusions, stamping, composites.
  • Excellent GD&T abilities in both generation, critique and tolerance stack analysis.
  • Good knowledge of DfM, DfA, DfC.
  • Good experience of managing suppliers.
  • Hands on experience of working with automotive High Voltage ePowertrain systems.
  • Experience of delivering ePowertrain commodities from early R&D to series production through an automotive product creation system.

Preferred experience, but not essential:

  • Mechanical systems development and integration for high performance hybrid and/or electric vehicles to ISO 26262.
  • Knowledge of relevant component legislation and certification requirements for automotive ePowertrain systems.
  • Understanding of hybrid and electric powertrain system functionalities and attributes at vehicle, system and component levels.
  • Driving product developments issues to resolution.
  • Use of test equipment to support mechanical system testing.
  • Previous responsibility in Formula Student/SAE team.
