Join us on our journey to net zero and help us power change.

About the Role

Base Location: Perth, Scotland

Salary: £35,142 - £40,246 depending on skills and experience + shift allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of other benefits to support your family, finances and wellbeing.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time

Based in our dedicated control room in Perth, Scotland, you will play a pivotal role within the team to monitor, control and optimise the operation of over 2GW of Onshore Wind, Solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) assets for SSE Renewables.

As an experienced operator in our critical 24/7 control centre, your focus will be to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operation of our plant/apparatus. You will have a direct influence on safe operations, contribute to the stability and balancing of the national electrical system, and ensure the best possible plant availability to maximise revenue, all whilst ensuring full contractual and regulatory compliance.

Some of your main accountabilities will include:

  • Monitoring of onshore Wind, Solar and Battery technologies in real-time, ensuring they meet set generation targets and commercial commitments.
  • Despatching assets in multiple markets, enabling revenue generation from markets such as the balancing mechanism, wholesale market, ancillary services, and contracted support services.
  • Ensuring asset availability and capability parameters are accurately declared/updated, to enable optimised trading and to remain compliant with associated regulations and national codes.
  • Round-the-clock vigilance and rapid response to fault conditions, including direct intervention by remote control, and co-ordination of an effective response from operational teams. Acting as an Operational Controller with default control responsibility, you will execute thousands of safety transactions annually - formally releasing and retrieving control of Wind, Solar and Battery assets in line with specified safety as part of an overall Safe System of Work.
  • Actively monitoring the safety of hundreds of site attendees across a fleet of over 50 operational sites through monitoring and direct intervention. Acting as Emergency Commander/Incident Controller, coordinating effective responses to significant incidents impacting people, environment, asset and SSE's reputation.

As this is a shift position there will be a requirement to work to a rota system, therefore, you should be flexible, located within 45 minutes commute, and able to commit to a structured shift pattern contributing to 24-hour, full year cover.

What do I need?

To be successful in this role, we would love you to have:

  • Experience within an operational control room environment, having held responsibilities aligned with those detailed above. Good understanding of the national electricity system and how Renewables contribute. Field/operational experience of electro-mechanical generating plant/apparatus, ideally within the Renewables sector.
  • Higher education HND qualified, or relatable industry experience together with qualification in a technical discipline (e.g. HNC).
  • Practical experience of Safe Systems of Work and strong knowledge of industry safety rules.
  • Strong IT and communication skills. Proficient in operating multiple software platforms including telephony and SCADA systems. Aptitude to learn new systems promptly is essential.
  • Ability to adapt to changing workloads positively without compromising key responsibilities, to be flexible, highly motivated and have a genuine passion for the industry.
