Accounts Assistant - 1 Year Mat Cover

We are looking for an Accounts Assistant to join a friendly and professional team at a SME Civil & Structural Design Engineering consultancy firm. The Accounts Assistant will play a key role in overseeing day-to-day and month-end financial management and accounting processes, processing payroll, and managing VAT and direct tax matters. This role requires full ownership of the Accounts/Finance function and the ability to produce accurate and timely financial information.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Implement financial controls, policies, and procedures.
- Oversee month-end accounting processes and reconcile key control accounts.
- Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns.
- Lead the preparation and analysis of monthly financial reports.
- Prepare monthly payroll data and ensure compliance with statutory regulations.
- Manage payments for payroll, rent, PAYE, VAT, and other taxes.
- Use internal Project Management system and Sage for various accounting tasks.
- Raise and send sales invoices and payment applications to clients.
- Perform credit checks on new clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
- Manage debtor and creditor control.
- Provide cover for Accounts Payable tasks as needed.
- Handle day-to-day financial queries from internal and external stakeholders.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- AAT/ACA/ACCA/CIMA (or equivalent) part qualified or qualified.
- Degree qualification is desirable.
- Minimum of 5 years Finance/Accountancy experience.
- Experience using SAGE 50 accounts.
- Experience of preparing payroll data.
- Experience of Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
- Knowledge of financial management in an SME is desirable.
- Strong skills in Project Management/CRM Database systems are desirable.
- Engineering industry experience is desirable.
- Advanced Excel skills including formulae and data analysis.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workload.
