Job Summary:

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Research and Development (R&D) Manager to lead our product-oriented initiatives. This role involves the initiation, planning, execution, and successful completion of new product development projects. The R&D Manager will oversee the entire development process, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to specification.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. New Product Development: Oversee the end-to-end development of in-house products, from ideation to launch, using the stage gate process.
  2. Innovation and Design: Drive innovation by conceptualising new product designs to maintain market competitiveness.
  3. Product Enhancement: Lead initiatives to improve the performance and features of existing products.
  4. Team Leadership: Manage a team of R&D professionals, including setting objectives, conducting annual reviews, and handling day-to-day people management tasks.
  5. Motivation and Performance: Ensure the team remains motivated, committed, and high-performing.
  6. Recruitment and Training: Handle department recruitment, training, and other line management responsibilities.
  7. Product Launch: Ensure successful product launches by managing deliverables, including design verification, bills of materials, and training.
  8. Company Values: Act as a positive ambassador for the company's values.
  9. Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with other departments, including Production, Procurement, Sales, Operations, Finance, and HR, as well as senior management.
  10. Project Management: Oversee new product development projects, managing labor resources, time, and material budgets.
  11. Policy Adherence: Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  12. Additional Duties: Perform other duties as required.

Reporting Structure:

  • Immediate Supervisor: Group Product and Technology Director
  • Direct Reports: R&D Team

Financial Responsibilities:

Manage R&D development costs within the approved budget.

Key Relationships:

  • Group P&T Director: Report on KPIs and implement new product development plans.
  • Production Manager: Provide technical product support and participate in continuous improvement programs and product launches.
  • R&D Staff: Ensure implementation of new product development deliverables and product launch support.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree in Engineering (BEng/MEng), Physics, or Maths (BSc/MSc), with Electrical & Electronics Engineering preferred.
  • Proven results-oriented individual with a strong emphasis on product improvement and new product design.
  • Practical experience with electronic assemblies, firmware, and software.
  • Experience managing complex projects.
  • Demonstrated track record of supervising, managing, and mentoring staff.
  • Over 5 years of experience in an engineering development role.
  • Experience in the marine/survey industry is a plus.
