Laboratory Support Assistant

Our client, a prestigious research institution based in Cambridge, is seeking a Laboratory Support Assistant to join their team. This is a temporary position for a sickness cover. The working pattern for this role is part-time, with 22.5 hours per week spread across Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

As a Laboratory Support Assistant, you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks to ensure the smooth operation of laboratory facilities. Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Washing, sterilisation, and specialised cleaning of laboratory equipment, glassware, and plastics
  • Preparation and processing of tissue culture glassware and plastic ware
  • Maintenance and care of washers, dryers, and autoclaves
  • Cleaning of tissue culture rooms and laboratory equipment, including Biological Safety Cabinets and CO2 incubators
  • Tidying and cleaning of cold rooms and organising monthly deep cleans
  • Identifying and reporting equipment faults and troubleshooting where necessary
  • Loading, unloading, and operating autoclaves and heat sterilisation ovens
  • Adhering to sterile and waste disposal practises
  • Quality control for media and sterilisation procedures
  • Carrying out weekly maintenance and basic repairs of core equipment
  • Organising equipment servicing and repair, including decontamination and completing safety forms
  • Acting as a point of contact for engineers carrying out servicing or repairs
  • Monitoring airflow in fume cupboards and organising decontamination of CO2 incubators
  • Disinfecting Biological Safety Cabinets using Phileas Hydrogen Peroxide diffusion
  • Assisting with pipette clinics and organising collection of pipettes
  • Maintaining accurate records of solutions, stock levels, and stock usage
  • Preparing and aliquoting media and buffers for sterilisation and distribution
  • Adhering to health and safety protocols and reporting any issues
  • Keeping laboratory areas tidy and assisting with lab moves and space rearrangements

To excel in this role, you should have a good understanding of laboratory equipment and maintenance processes. Experience with autoclaves, sterilisation procedures, and media preparation will be highly advantageous. Strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team are also essential.
