Summary

Are you someone who cares deeply about achieving high standards, and helping to make beauty and history accessible to all? Would you like to be part of a dedicated professional team working at one of the National Trust's finest houses, looking after its collections of art and objects, and presenting them to visitors?

If so, you could become a Collections and House Officer at Hardwick, bringing to life the history and significance of this much-loved place.

This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave. At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 10 months.

What it's like to work here

Reporting to the Collections and House Manager, you'll join a team of 8 including the Property Curator, C&HM, 2 Collections and House Officers and 4 Collections Assistants.

Hardwick Hall is one of the most impressive Elizabethan buildings in the country. Celebrated internationally, the committed team works hard to care for the property's astonishing artefacts, including one of the finest collections of tapestries in Europe. A large-scale project will develop access across the estate, providing links with local trails and Stainsby Mill, one of our portfolio properties. This is a busy, forward-thinking property and the team is looking for engaging people who will enjoy this fast-paced environment.

As one of two Collections and House Officers, you'll be responsible for opening the house every day, and making sure there are enough people in the right places to give visitors a consistently good experience.

Supervised by a Collections and House Manager, you'll be responsible for routine conservation, preventive conservation and the annual programme of deep cleaning. Your attention and expertise will help to ensure excellent standards of care throughout the house.

Working with the Collections Assistants you'll collect and record information gathered during cleaning and housekeeping, to improve our knowledge and understanding of the house and all that's in it. You'll use preventive conservation methods to improve how we look after everything, and how we present it to visitors. And you'll be sharing stories about the past with anyone who's interested, as well as your personal experience of working here. There will be the opportunity to line manage some of the Collections Assistants developing your management and leadership skills.
