About the Company:

A leading UK manufacturer specializing in the FMCG industy. Our client is dedicated to delivering high-quality British-manufactured products to meet their customers' requirements.

Main Purpose of Job:

The Maintenance Engineer will be responsible for maintaining and repairing factory equipment, ensuring the chemical plant operates efficiently. The role involves proactive maintenance to improve efficiencies, reduce waste and costs, and eliminate recurring problems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and repair all factory equipment, including steam boilers and pressure vessels, with periodic checks by the Boiler Inspector.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Develop and implement a preventative maintenance schedule, analyzing system weak points to enhance reliability.
  • Spare Parts Management: Order and manage spare parts, ensuring stock of vital spares is maintained and costs are controlled.
  • Routine Servicing: Organize routine servicing schedules, keeping detailed records for audits and inspections.
  • Installation and Fitting: Fit new parts for maintenance and new products, ensuring all new parts are signed off as ‘fit for purpose'.
  • Emergency Response: Respond immediately to urgent equipment breakdowns, including ad hoc call-outs when required.
  • Pipework and Welding: Prepare pipework and perform welding as necessary for maintenance and new installations.
  • Blocked Pipelines: Clear blocked pipelines and perform emergency repairs.
  • Collaboration: Work with production, engineering colleagues, and suppliers to improve and prevent downtime.

Organisational Strategy and Leadership:

  • Maintenance Planning: Organize maintenance plans and discuss issues with the management team and directors.
  • External Liaison: Communicate effectively with outside engineers, electricians, Health and Safety Executives, and Boiler Inspectors.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure machinery is switched off for safety or mechanical reasons as necessary.

Hours of Work:

  • Regular Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:30am to 3:15pm (40 hours per week, with 15 and 30-minute unpaid breaks).
  • Weekend Work: Occasional planned maintenance on weekends (up to 8 hours per month paid at time and 1/2).
  • Emergency Situations: Flexibility to stay late if a breakdown or emergency occurs.
  • Holiday Scheduling: Coordinate holidays with other engineers and the Works Manager to ensure coverage.

Skills and Experience Required:

  • Qualified, time-served apprentice trained in an engineering discipline, ideally to NVQ level 3.
  • Multi-skilled with a mechanical bias (80% mechanical).
  • Proficient in mechanical engineering (hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, pumps, and gearboxes).
  • Excellent fault-finding skills.
  • Skilled in MMA welding (TIG and MIG welding preferred).
  • Basic electrical knowledge.
  • Leadership abilities.
  • Effective timekeeping and flexibility.
  • Positive and self-motivated attitude.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • FLT license preferred.
  • Experience in running and maintaining coal and oil boilers is a plus.
