Assistant Underwriter - Construction

About us

Avencia Consulting are working with a leading Specialty Insurer based in the City, who are looking to hire an Assistant Underwriter to join their Construction team.

The role

The primary purpose of the role is to provide underwriting support to the Construction Underwriting team within the wider D&F property team.

Key accountabilities

  • Assist with day to day underwriting duties including;
  • Reviewing and underwriting new opportunities focusing on review of historical performance, policy wordings, and pricing adequacy based upon predefined underwriting rules and/or guidelines
  • Liaise with the placing broker throughout the underwriting cycle and policy period to ensure receipt of all necessary documents and manage any credit control issues
  • Attending regular broker meetings to generate new leads and build relationships with key broking partners
  • Representing the business at market events
  • Working collaboratively with other members of the construction team and assist in team admin duties
  • Assist with Account Receivable collections when required
  • Accountable for accuracy and completeness of data entry
  • Liaise with Underwriters to confirm policy issuance instructions for policies, endorsements, forms, notices, certificates, etc.
  • Ensure ESG standards of the team. Working collaboratively with Underwriters and Head of Sustainability

Skills & experience

  • Experience within underwriting or pricing either in construction or another line relevant of business
  • Progress towards ACII or other relevant commercial insurance industry designations
  • knowledge of commercial insurance and regulatory requirements
  • Desire to develop knowledge on risk identification and management within the global construction sector
  • competency in MS Office applications: Word, Outlook, Excel and Adobe Standard required
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills when dealing with key stake holders internally and externally.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to work effectively and professionally with diverse groups
  • Proven prioritisation and time management skills and ability to triage workload essential within a deadline intensive working environment.
  • High level of numeric competency combined with ability to perform detail-oriented qualitative review are required in order to adequately digest risk submissions.
  • Must be able to self-lead effectively and work effectively both independently and with teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver and manage accurate thoughtful detail-oriented work within tight deadlines and/or while working extended work days
