The salary for this role is Teacher's Main Pay Range / Upper Pay Range (Fringe): £31,350 - £47,839 per annum, pro-rata + SEN allowance: £2,539 - £5,009 (level dependent on additional relevant qualifications and experience.

We are excited to be hiring a new Advisory Teacher for Physical Disability to join our Physical Disability team in Surrey's Physical and Sensory Support Service from January 2025.

This position is for three days a week across school term times. You will be based in Woking or Leatherhead but the majority of your time will be spent delivering a service to physically disabled children and young people from pre-school age to 19 years in their education settings across Surrey.

About the Service

Our Advisory Teachers for Physical Disability (PD) are part of the Physical and Sensory Support (PSS) Service. This specialised teaching service supports the specific needs of defined children and young people in Surrey as well as their educational establishments. As a specialist education team, we work to ensure children and young people get the most out of their education by ensuring that individual and organisational needs are identified and met.

Operating within a dynamic and fast-paced environment, Physical and Sensory Support focuses on supporting children and young people who have complex additional needs and disabilities. We collaborate closely with their educational settings and families as well as other professionals and organisations involved in their care and development. Our service plays a crucial role in supporting statutory duties and provisions while promoting achievement among the pupils we support.

About the Role

As an Advisory Teacher for Physical Disability, you'll bring extensive knowledge of additional needs and disabilities as well as the provision required to meet those needs.

We are seeking a qualified Teacher to take on a case-list of physically disabled pupils in the west of Surrey. Most of the children will be in preschool or school settings (to 19 years) but some visits will be to very young children in their home setting. You will work with staff in education settings to identify needs in relation to the child / young person's physical disability and advise on education provision to enable improved access to learning. You will have knowledge of how assistive technology can enhance access to the curriculum.

The role involves multi-professional working with colleagues in Physical and Sensory Support, other teams in the local authority as well as colleagues in health and other support organisations. Liaison, including writing and sharing visit reports with staff, colleagues and parents is one of the key tasks in this role. Your assessments and advice may contribute to statutory assessments and reviews, therefore you will have a comprehensive knowledge of the SEN Code of Practice. As required, you will plan and deliver disability awareness training or bespoke training on how to meet specific pupil's needs to staff in settings, or other professionals to support their knowledge and understanding of the inclusion of physically disabled children / young people. In addition, you will contribute to the work and development of the overall PSS Service.

You will be based in either our Woking or Leatherhead office but as this is a peripatetic role, you will need to be willing and able travel to settings across your case-list area as well as travel across Surrey county to meet the wider demands of the role.

Shortlisting Criteria

To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:

  • Degree or diploma and Qualified Teacher Status
  • Additional experience in SEND and / or qualifications in teaching children and young people with physical disabilities or other additional needs
  • Detailed, contemporary knowledge and understanding of the nature of physical disability and its impact on social, emotional, cognitive, language and behavioural development
  • Detailed, contemporary knowledge and understanding of the statutory framework for education, particularly in relation to SEND, the Equalities Act 2010 and the Inclusion Agenda
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and face-to-face with children / young people, families and a range of professional colleagues
  • Partnership working with a range of professionals in the production and carrying out of assessments, target-setting and intervention programmes
