Manchester City Council is seeking a Building Control Surveyor, Class 3 registered, to lead a service that provides specialist technical support within the Planning, Licensing & Building Control Service. The role holder will work in partnership with internal services and external partners, focused on organisational objectives and embracing the principle of joint working.

Day to Day of the role:

  • Provide specialist technical advice to support the delivery of organisational priorities and ensure the Council meets its legal obligations.
  • Represent the service/organisation in meetings, working groups, and forums, driving delivery of priorities.
  • Act as a strong advocate for the organisation's people approach, ensuring diversity is positively valued.
  • Provide support and supervision to inspectors of all levels (class 1 to 3) and sign off their work.
  • Lead in the decision-making process on technical aspects of the Building Control function, handling innovative, complex, and sensitive technical and legislative issues.
  • Specialise in Fire Safety and Safe at Sports Grounds, liaising with Council at SAG meetings and ensuring public safety.
  • Work corporately and with other organisations to deliver safe, inclusive, and quality developments in the city.
  • Ensure service delivery and outcomes align with policies and processes integral to associated initiatives.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Qualified to degree level or equivalent in a related discipline.
  • Professional membership of a building control related organisation such as MCABE, MCIOB, or MRICS.
  • Registered Building Inspector to at least a Class 3 – Specialist level in accordance with the Building Inspector Competence Framework.
  • Extensive knowledge of the Building Control legislative framework and a comprehensive understanding of associated legislation and Council policy.
  • Experience in a Local Authority or Approved Inspector building control organisation suitable for the role.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically, with effective people management and planning skills.
