About the Role: We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Science Technician to join our supportive team at an SEN (Special Educational Needs) School in Bexley. This role is crucial in ensuring that our science department runs smoothly and efficiently, providing essential support to our teaching staff and students. The successful candidate will play a key part in preparing practical lessons, maintaining equipment, and ensuring that health and safety standards are upheld at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Laboratory Preparation: Prepare and set up equipment, materials, and chemicals for practical science lessons and experiments, ensuring all resources are ready for use.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Regularly check, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus to ensure they are in good working order.
  • Health and Safety Compliance: Adhere to and enforce health and safety regulations within the science department, conducting regular safety checks and ensuring the safe storage and disposal of chemicals and materials.
  • Support for SEN Students: Provide tailored support to SEN students during practical lessons, adapting resources and methods to meet their individual needs.
  • Inventory Management: Monitor and manage the inventory of laboratory supplies, ordering new stock as needed and keeping accurate records.
  • Administrative Duties: Assist with administrative tasks such as updating records, preparing worksheets, and maintaining an organized filing system for lesson plans and resources.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with science teachers to develop and enhance the science curriculum, providing input on practical activities and experiments.
  • Professional Development: Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices and advancements in science education and SEN support.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A background in science, with relevant qualifications or experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge and understanding of SEN and the ability to adapt practical science activities to meet the needs of SEN students.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Familiarity with health and safety regulations in a laboratory setting.
  • Basic IT skills for administrative tasks and inventory management.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in an educational setting, particularly with SEN students.
  • Relevant certifications or training in laboratory safety and first aid.
