The Information Services Division (ISD) is the primary provider of IT services to UCL. We support and enhance learning, teaching, research and administrative processes by providing information- and technology-related services to over 50,000 staff and students of UCL and associated institutions.

We are modernising our technology foundations, digitising the processes of the university to transform experience for students and staff, and partnering across the university to drive differentiation in UCL education and research.

Within ISD, this post is in Faculty IT & Partnering which provides local specialist applications and systems support and IT strategic business partnering for users in the School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS), in the Institute of Education (IOE), the Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment and to departments in the Faculties of Arts & Humanities, Social & Historical Sciences and Laws (SLASH).

About the role

Reporting to the Applications and Systems Manager, we are looking for a SWindows & Systems Administrator to occupy a self-standing role providing technical leadership within the Faculty IT & Partnering Group and to lead on high-priority and complex work that delivers maximum value to teaching and research.

This multifaceted position includes but is not exclusive to the following:
? Providing technical leadership: Providing creative input, you will be responsible for the implementation of IT solutions and the leadership of project's technical implementation team, including any detailed design activities.
? Design and delivery of bespoke or specialist technology solutions to Faculties across UCL: You will capitalise on internal ISD offerings and externally provided platforms where possible, while supporting bespoke services where necessary to deliver benefits to Faculties.
? Ownership of technical escalations and critical incidents: You will act as the escalation point for the Faculty IT Support and Applications & Systems Specialists.
? Deputising for the IT Service Manager: You will provide cover for the IT Service Manager, attend meetings and act as the escalation point.

About you

We would be delighted to receive applications from experienced Senior Windows Systems Administrators with experience of working in a service-oriented environment. Expert knowledge of the following is essential: Windows and/or Linux Administration, Networks (DNS/DHCP, VPN, Firewall), VMware virtualised environments, Monitoring and logging platforms and Authentication (AD/OpenLDAP/SAML).

Additional expertise that we will prioritise include previous experience using a range of agile project management methods, the ability to communicate technical and non-technical ideas to a range of different audiences, excellent problem solving, logical and abstract thinking skills (including an ability to diagnose complex hardware and software faults) and the ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.

While not essential, your application will be strengthened if you are able to demonstrate any one or some of the following skills and attributes:

  • Experience of testing strategies and methods
  • Previous experience of one-to-one staff training or mentoring
  • Previous experience working within a university, or other research focused environment.
  • Previous experience of working with laboratory-based specialist IT equipment
  • Knowledge of IT Service Management principles and frameworks such as ITIL
  • Knowledge of research IT computing including some experience gained in a research-related environment.
  • Research IT - Experience of operating within a secure computing environment against strict information security policies.
