The Role

As Senior Carbon Engineer, you will be instrumental in leading and delivering low carbon solutions and innovations across United Utilities exciting and expansive capital programme. The work permeates all levels of the organisation and you will influence the fostering of a culture that prioritises low carbon thinking and propels the company towards its ambitious environmental goals. You will become a beacon of sustainability, embodying the commitment to a greener future in a pivotal position that supports the delivery of United Utilities carbon pledges and targets

You will support in the development of carbon management tools and processes, ensuring that the entire Commercial, Engineering, and Capital Delivery (CEC) team is equipped with the knowledge to make informed, eco-conscious decisions. Managing carbon reporting and benefits tracking, you will play a crucial role in maintaining transparency and accountability in United Utilities' journey towards net zero. By conducting life cycle assessments, you will ensure that carbon reduction efforts are measurable and impactful and by collaborating with supply chain partners, you will drive forward-thinking carbon reduction plans that align with the company's vision of a net-zero future.

Stakeholder engagement is vital for this role and you will need to build strong working relationships, manage key internal and external stakeholders effectively and provide subject matter expert (SME) advice on innovation and carbon to our partners, capital delivery teams and the wider business

In-person site attendance in Lingley Mere, Warrington is required for a minimum of three days per week to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration, alongside some travel to other sites in the North West and flexible hours to support work-life balance. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to identify and implement low carbon solutions within the capital programme
  • Lead initiatives that align with the organization's carbon reduction targets, focusing on innovation and strategic carbon management
  • Conduct carbon benefit and lifecycle assessments and support technical governance and consistency across projects
  • Facilitate the development and improvement of carbon estimation tools and methodologies, supporting the Principal Carbon Engineer
  • Stay informed on emerging carbon reduction technologies and innovations, contributing to internal and external knowledge-sharing efforts

Skills and Experience

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Qualified to degree level in a relevant engineering, environmental, scientific or STEM discipline or have equivalent skills, knowledge and experience
  • Experience of providing technical advice, leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes and a knowledge and passion for the carbon agenda, including low carbon materials and technologies and carbon life cycle assessments
  • Hold a current UK/EU driving licence
