Job description:

To provide an excellent café facility to students and staff within the in-house catering service. To manage the kitchen area within the Duke St café, including supervision of a small team and manage catering supplies and food preparation to enable a breakfast and lunch service during term time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Utilise previous experience and knowledge of the area of work to support an effective, user-friendly and professional service
  • Set up and operate the kitchen area of the Duke Street cafe to facilitate an establishment standard breakfast and lunch service
  • Demonstrate a range of required skills and understand use of standard kitchen equipment and advise on the safe use of such equipment
  • Establishes systems to ensure accurate records of maintenance are kept
  • Establishes systems to ensure accurate records of H&S are kept
  • Establish systems to ensure accurate Food safety records are kept
  • Comply with internal and external health and safety guidelines, instructions and regulations
  • Ensure kitchen and associated areas are maintained, and in a clean and tidy manner at all times
  • Ensure high levels of customer service promoting a positive image of the College. Including participating in open evenings and events where applicable
  • Comply with set quality standards and procedural instructions
  • Help to ensure through good working practices that the objectives, values and aims of the school college are achieved and students receive an excellent experience as service users
  • Supervise staff as required. This will include:
  • o Allocating tasks
  • o Ensuring accurate completion of tasks
  • o Monitoring performance
  • Train staff (including bank staff) where necessary in particular areas of expertise and/or specialist knowledge
  • Undertake risk assessments to ensure risks are understood and mitigated
  • Resolve problems and issues, diagnose faults and respond to complaints or queries, where appropriate refer on to the appropriate perso
  • Assist with budget and resource management
  • Contribute to the development of a healthy, inclusive and diverse food offer meeting the needs of all customers
  • Monitor levels of stocks and consumables/basic equipment when required to do so order replacements acting within procurement policies
  • Where it is identified as necessary handle cash or cash equivalents
  • Comply with college security, stock control, cash-handling procedures, standards and audit requirements
  • Comply with financial regulations within own area of work
  • Due to the changing nature of our work, this job description serves as a framework to outline the main areas of responsibility. You may be required to undertake other activities of a similar nature that fall within the remit of your area of work.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

Essential Criteria:

  • Relevant sector practical experience and trade skills.
  • Experience in the effective use of Microsoft Office applications and / or other computer packages including Word documents and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Good practical skills and the ability to demonstrate to others.
  • Prior industry/college experience of similar employment
  • Ability to work both as a member of a team and independently using your own initiative.
  • Strong customer focus and communication skills.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, honesty, transparency and commitment to/ownership of the mission & values of the College.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of maintaining trade equipment & tools
  • Relevant maintenance knowledge within domestic, commercial and industrial applications
