What it's like to work here

Dartmoor – in the heart of Devon, is an ancient landscape with stunning views, imposing granite tors, deep wooded valleys, fast flowing rivers and rugged wide-open spaces. The National Trust's Dartmoor portfolio is large and diverse, adding up to 5% of the land ownership of Dartmoor National Park.

Lydford Gorge is home to a temperate rainforest, luxuriantly green and humid. The enveloping trees and high rocky crags with sounds of bird calls, dripping water and the gurgling river. Visit the 30m-high Whitelady Waterfall or descend into the Devil's Cauldron pothole on a platform over the river.

You'll be working closely with the Lydford Rangers, a southwest Ranger, volunteers and Lydford property staff. Using your practical countryside management and conservation skills, you'll be helping to manage, improve and restore countryside sites at Lydford and in the Southwest of Dartmoor.

What you'll be doing

As part of the Dartmoor Ranger team, you'll spend some of your week supporting the rangers at Lydford, but also a grade 9 ranger at Cadover in the southwest corner of Dartmoor. The work will involve liaison with tenant farmers, commoners, regulatory bodies, sourcing materials, and observing practical works.

Helping to deliver projects and support the writing of management plans. There will be desk-based work as well as working on site.
