Archaeology Assistant - Young Person’s Placement

Do you love being outdoors and working as part of a team, where no two days are the same? Do you want to develop new skills that could help with future job opportunities? We're offering the opportunity for a young person to work alongside the Changing Chalk team delivering heritage engagement in the South Downs.

This is a grant-funded 6-month placement, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and The Linbury Trust. The conditions of the funding are that we appoint a person aged 16-24. You'll be working 2 days per week, between Monday to Thursday.

Proposed start date is Monday 2nd September, though this can be flexible. For under 18's this role will count as 15 hours of work, out of the 20 hours or more a week of working or volunteering that you can do whilst in part-time education or training.

What it's like to work here

This is an exciting opportunity to work in the spectacular landscape of the South Downs. The role will be split between working at Saddlescombe Farm at the foot of Devil's Dyke, and Heritage Eastbourne. You'll be helping the heritage officer and volunteers with the monitoring and preservation of scheduled monuments and creating management plans, as well as working with volunteers to investigate newly mapped archaeology.

There will be lots to learn about in relation to the Changing Chalk area Monuments and how we can work with volunteers to discover more about the history and stories of the downs.

The Changing Chalk team is based at Saddlescombe Farm, close to Devil's Dyke near Brighton, and Heritage Eastbourne is based at the Town Hall and Beachy Head Story in Eastbourne. You'll need to be able travel to and from these sites for work.

What you'll be doing

You'll be helping to investigate the condition of monuments on the downs, creating management plans to ensure they are properly looked after, and helping to organise outings. You'll also need to aid in the on the ground investigation of sites, using a variety of archaeological methods.

You'll be working on cataloguing and researching archaeological finds from excavations in the area, digitising these archives and working on the links between the objects and the people who lived in this Downland settlement. You'll also assist with interpreting these stories and engaging our audiences.

Who we're looking for

  • willing to work outdoors in all weathers
  • happy to spend the day walking across the Downs, in woodlands, or working at a desk
  • interested in learning about history and archaeology
  • keen to learn about different archaeological techniques and methods of investigation.
  • a good communicator and able to work as part of a small team
