About the Team

The Street Works Team operate within Surrey County Council's Highways and Transport service. The Compliance Team's role is to monitor the performance of statutory undertaker's work on the highway. This is done by carrying out inspections on their works to make certain that they are safe whilst in operation and that any subsequent reinstatement of excavations are carried out to the required standards set out by the Department for Transport.

By doing this, the team help to reduce congestion and help to improve the safety of the highway for pedestrians and motorists. The team will also assist colleagues in other Highway teams with any specialist advice they may require relating to works by statutory undertakers.

About the Role

Driving a Surrey CC Vehicle to carry out your duties as a Street Works Officer, you will be lone working for much of the day, route planning to maximise your time. You will carry out inspections for the Lane Rental Scheme, the Permit Scheme and monitor street and road works performance, contributing to the Local Transport Plan objective of reducing congestion and ensuring the best possible service to all highway users.

You will also carry out 'live site' and reinstatement inspections, determining their compliance to the Safety at Street Works and Road Works, A Code of Practice (2013) and the Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in the Highway (2020) and permit inspections to check that works are complying with the agreed permit conditions.

The disruption that can be caused by road works and street works inevitably lead to enquiries from members of the public and it is an important part of this role to respond to these with informative and sometimes detailed responses.

As part of the team, you will work collaboratively with the Street Works Compliance Manager, the Senior Street Works Officers and your colleagues across the team. You will strive to continually improve and sometimes challenge our current ways of working, helping to ensure that our processes remain relevant and effective in frequently changing external and internal environments.
