Engineering Configuration Manager

Do you want to be part of one of the most intricate and exciting defence programmes in the UK today? We, here at the SDA, are looking for a highly experienced engineer to play a vital role in the Dreadnought Programme, enabling the delivery of the first Dreadnought Class submarine into operation.

The driving ambition of the Dreadnought Programme is for the first Dreadnought Class submarine to be ready for operations by December 2030, with the remaining submarines delivered in steady succession thereafter. Supporting the Dreadnought Programme as Engineering Configuration Manager, you will be responsible for the development and implementation of configuration management processes to support management of the engineering design, including change management and configuration status accounting across the wider business.

The Engineering Configuration Manager will ensure that configuration management practices are applied across the Dreadnought Programme and aligned to instructions described in Def Stan 05-57 and JSP 945. You must be able to understand the impact of design decisions within project time and cost constraints, whilst providing guidance and advice, with full cognisance of functional and safety requirements and the application of all appropriate standards.

Regular in-person attendance is required to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration alongside flexibility of hours to support work-life balance. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

What you'll be doing

  • Interface with industry as the intelligent customer both in a scrutiny role and supporting the identification of application risks
  • Chair the Dreadnought Design Control Board to manage lower-level design change not on contract and instruct and fund feasibility studies
  • Attend all DNA change boards and ensure appropriate level of change control is applied across the programme
  • Provide expert advice and guidance in own technical area to solve complex technical problems and identify application risks
  • Monitor and implement any governance and assurance policies and procedures to ensure the 'safe & professional' status of the area led

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Be a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or have the ability to obtain within 9 months of starting in the post
  • Have a relevant Level 4 (i.e., HNC or higher) qualification in a relevant subject, or have the equivalent relevant experience
  • Have experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes
  • Have experience of managing stakeholder engagement, both internal and external, and at all levels
  • Have evidence of holding and chairing large technical meetings

In addition to the responsibilities above, the following technical competences and behaviours will be assessed at interview:
