Our client are a global leader in chemical manufacturing, dedicated to driving innovation and sustainability in the industry. They are at the forefront of developing eco-friendly solutions that minimise environmental impact and contribute to a sustainable future. We are seeking on their behalf a passionate and experienced R&D Engineer / Principal Chemist to spearhead their sustainability projects and lead the development of groundbreaking, sustainable chemical products and processes.

Role Overview:

As the R&D Engineer / Principal Chemist, you will play a pivotal role in our client's sustainability initiatives, driving research and development efforts to create environmentally responsible products and technologies. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, leading projects that focus on reducing carbon footprint, enhancing energy efficiency, and developing sustainable alternatives for raw materials and processes. Your expertise will be instrumental in helping our client achieve their sustainability goals and maintain their position as an industry leader.

You will be expected to kick start projects that could have the potential to fail. They have confirmed they are not afraid of failure as that is how they all learn to move forward. Until a project is tried they won't be able to know 100% if it will work and you shouldn't therefore be afraid to try. Some of these projects have the probability of not being implemented for 5-10 years in the future as some of the technology might not have even been invented yet. You can therefore get involved in helping to create a more sustainable future and drive the business forward with your ideas being implemented worldwide.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute experiments to optimise chemical processes with a focus on reducing environmental impact.
  • Collaborate with production, engineering, and quality teams to implement sustainable technologies in manufacturing operations.
  • Identify and evaluate sustainable raw materials, chemicals, and alternative technologies that align with company goals both from a technical and commercial feasibility point of view.
  • Develop life cycle assessments (LCA) and environmental impact analyses for new and existing products.
  • Provide technical expertise in the formulation and testing of eco-friendly products.
  • Drive innovation through continuous exploration of emerging trends and technologies in green chemistry and sustainability.
  • Prepare and present detailed technical reports, publications, and presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and industry standards in all R&D activities.
  • Mentor and guide junior scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of sustainability and innovation.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a BSc or Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on sustainable chemistry or green engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of experience in R&D within the chemical manufacturing industry, with a strong emphasis on sustainability projects.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing sustainable chemical processes and products.
  • In-depth knowledge of green chemistry principles, renewable resources, and environmental regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and drive solutions.
  • Experience with life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies and tools is highly desirable.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and inspire stakeholders at all levels.
  • Passion for sustainability and a commitment to driving positive environmental change.
