Senior Ecologist

Your new company
My client is a Scottish highland-based consultancy established 14 years ago and under growth. They started with a focus on Ornithology and Ornithological research, now working on a range of projects primarily in the renewable energy and residential sectors.
They work across the Scottish highlands and isles to provide dependable advice, support and documentation to assist with the gaining of planning permissions and adherence to wildlife legislation and planning conditions through and beyond the construction process.

Your new role
They are recruiting a Senior Ecologist to join their small team and support a range of projects.
Responsibilities:

  • Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (habitat surveys and condition assessments).
  • Biodiversity Impact Assessments.
  • Protected and priority species surveys.
  • Preparing quotations and tenders.
  • Ecological Impact Assessments and further detailed assessments.
  • Other report writing as required.
  • Project management and organisation.
  • Team leadership and management (if desired).

What you'll need to succeed

  • Genuine and demonstrable enthusiasm for ecology and the environment;
  • Experience of phase 1 habitat surveys/ UK Habs and protected species surveys;
  • Member of CIEEM;
  • Degree or equivalent in an ecology related discipline;
  • Experience of using QGIS or ArcGIS desirable;
  • Survey licence for at least one protected species e.g. bats, dormouse, GCN, barn owl, rare reptiles etc;
  • Ability to lead field teams and manage projects;
  • Willingness to be flexible as required;
  • Excellent report writing skills;
  • Motivated to work both independently and as part of a team, often in remote locations and sometimes during unsociable hours;
  • Good communication skills both with colleagues, clients and third parties;
  • Experience of writing or securing European Protected Species Mitigation licences (EPSM) for at least one protected species would be desirable;
  • Comfortable designing surveys and quoting for work; and
  • Full driving licence and use of a vehicle (long term hire can be arranged if necessary.
