Embedded Hardware Design Engineer

Due to continued growth and plans to increase our range of wireless monitoring devices, we have an exciting opportunity for an Embedded Hardware Design Engineer to join our team!

Synetica design and manufacture a wide range of LoRaWAN wireless IoT devices for monitoring Air Quality, Energy Consumption and Asset Health. These products are used across many diverse sectors including commercial buildings, military sites, healthcare, universities, schools and industrial sites.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Design Engineer to join a tight knit, international company.

You will be working as part of a small, experienced team to develop products from the ground up.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop hardware solutions with a focus on PCB layout and prototyping, ensuring seamless integration of sensors, microcontrollers, and RF communication modules.
  • Develop schematics and PCB layouts for LoRaWAN wireless IoT devices, focus on ultra-low power, multi-layer PCBs with high RF efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve design issues, optimising for signal integrity, battery life, wireless range and automated testing.
  • Create and test IoT hardware prototypes, validating functionality, performance, and durability. Liaise with the Synetica design team and the production facility in Birmingham to ensure boards are manufactured to a high standard with low defect rates.
  • Conduct hardware validation tests, including RF performance, signal integrity, sensor performance, battery life and environmental stress testing.
  • Contribute to R&D efforts to improve existing IoT products and develop new innovative solutions.

Key Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience in hardware design (STM32 or similar) with a focus on IoT devices and systems.
  • Proficiency in printed circuit design tools such as Altium Designer/Fusion 360 or similar.
  • Experience with wireless communication protocols and technologies (e.g. LoRa, NB-IoT, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.).
  • Strong knowledge of low-power electronics, sensor integration, and microcontroller interfacing.
  • Experience with PCB layout and design for IoT devices, including ultra-low power, multi-layer boards.
