Head of Marketing & Communications

York Minster, one of the most iconic landmarks in the North of England, seeks a dynamic and strategic individual as their Head of Marketing & Communications. In this pivotal role, you'll develop and implement innovative marketing and communication initiatives that amplify their brand, drive visitor numbers, and solidify York Minster's position as a leading cultural destination and place of worship.

With over 200 members of staff and 400 volunteers the Minster welcomes over 150,000 worshippers, they are a leading tourist destination attracting 600,000 visitors annually. Having developed a clear vision and strategy taking them through to 2030 and beyond, they are undergoing a number of £ multi-million investment projects with a Centre of Excellence for Heritage Craft completing in 2024 and further planned capital investment projects in the pipeline as part of the wider Neighbourhood Plan.

Key Responsibilities

The Head of Marketing & Communications will be responsible for;

  • Developing and executing a comprehensive audience engagement strategy, driving year-on-year growth in visitor numbers and brand awareness.
  • Overseeing the creation and implementation of targeted marketing campaigns across traditional and digital platforms.
  • Leading the creation of compelling narratives across various formats (print, digital, etc.) to engage diverse audiences and effectively communicate York Minster's mission and story.
  • Managing and mentoring a team of marketing and communication professionals, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and high performance.
  • Leveraging data and audience insights to inform strategic decision-making for campaign development and content creation.
  • Ensuring consistent brand messaging and a unified voice across all marketing and communication touchpoints.
  • Identifying and capitalising on new marketing opportunities, fostering strong relationships with external partners and media outlets to maximise reach and brand visibility.

Key Requirements

  • Substantial experience of marketing and communications delivery in a consumer focused environment and ideally of destination marketing
  • Experienced in all areas of Marketing & Communications, ideally strong CRM, Digital and exceptional stakeholder management skills
  • Experience of inspiring and leading a marketing and communications team
  • Proven ability to handle complex messaging, demonstrated through successful PR/crisis management experience
  • Strong data-driven approach, evidenced by a track record of using insights to inform decision-making
  • Needs to be commercially focused but can balance that with understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the not-for-profit sector
  • You should have a values led approach and be empathetic to role of a Cathedral
