Posted by Reed.

Are you empathetic and can work well in pressurised situations thinking on your feet. you will engage with suicidal, distressed and vulnerable passengers. They will also provide a high-visibility presence to deter trespass and other crime.

You will be responsible for :-

  1. The patrolling of the public area to identify suicidal, distressed or vulnerable passengers and to make an intervention to prevent an act of suicide or harm to the individual or others
  2. Ensuring all passengers behave in a safe and responsible manner and adhere to all necessary safety procedures.
  3. Undertaking high visibility patrols to deter trespass and other crime.
  4. The reporting of any station infrastructure defects to the necessary department.
  5. Welfare officers should spend all their time patrolling and should not remain inside, in non public areas unless on an agreed break.
  6. Officers are expected to patrol each area separately.
  7. Visual checks should be performed of all High-Risk areas as these should not be occupied by any Members of the public. Visually checking any security gates are shut and locked
  8. Where there are two Safeguarding Welfare Officers breaks should be staggered so there is always one officer on duty.

Their role is to preserve life and prevent crime.

PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR FOCUS IS ON SAFEGUARDING, TRESPASS AND WELFARE AND THIS MUST ALWAYS BE YOUR PRIORITY

The following requirements are expected of the Safeguarding Welfare Officer staff:

  2. Always sign both IN and OUT (all visitors and vehicles) as you enter and leave.
  3. All accidents are to be reported with details recorded in the station accident book where provided

Role Purpose: Think safe, be safe

Whilst your role is important to deter station trespass/ suicide incidents you must also note the following:

  • Do not use mobile phones when patrolling for personal calls
  • Do not put your self in harms way. If you believe assistance is required, request support of another member of the stations team
  • Do not spend large amounts of time in the waiting shelters or mess rooms. Your visibility on platforms is critical to the success of the role
  • Do not eat or smoke whilst patrolling
  • Do not go onto the track to stop a trespasser (To be covered in station induction)
  • Do not attempt to retrieve an item that may have fallen onto the track

What additional support is available to me?

  • If you are unclear regards any aspect of stations operations, do speak with the Station Team Leader / Station Manager / Trespass and Suicide Reduction Manager
  • In the event of an emergency, you may be required to contact the Signaller, BTP and KICC (To be covered in station induction)
