Laboratory Manager

Reed Scientific are working in partnership with a food and drink testing company who are seeking a Laboratory Manager to oversee their lab operations. The role encompasses overall responsibility for technical operations, quality assurance, and health and safety. This is an ideal position for a proactive individual with a strong background in analytical chemistry, laboratory management and a focus on quality assurance and procedure implementation.
Day to Day of the role:
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the lab, ensuring all practices and processes align with ISO 17025 standards, including UKAS and ISO 17025.
- Oversee technical operations, ensuring the technical adequacy and accuracy of laboratory methods and tests.
- Strive to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and speed up turnaround times.
- Monitor laboratory performance and initiate actions to strengthen results.
- Manage consumables availability and associated cost control.
- Ensure maintenance, repair, servicing, and calibration of equipment and instrumentation.
- Maintain laboratory accreditation through adherence to ISO 17025, responding to UKAS actions, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Conduct audits and risk assessments, ensuring compliance with legislation and standards.
- Complete Health and Safety/COSHH Risk Assessments.
- Coordinate training and continuous upskilling of the team in risk management, COSHH, and safe working practices.
- Report any deviations, errors, or quality concerns immediately.
- Support the development of new analytical techniques and identifying additional functionality of existing analytical techniques and oversee the introduction of new methods to the laboratory.
- Identifying training needs, continuous staff development and conducting appraisals.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience in laboratory management, analytical chemistry and ability to troubleshoot is required (industry and/or academic).
Desirable Skills & Qualifications:
- Quality assurance experience, knowledge of regulatory requirements and quality standards.
- Experience or theoretical knowledge of ICP-OES and GC-MS.
- Ability to conduct audits, inspections, and investigations.
- High level of planning, organisation, and resource management skills.
- Proactive in detecting and resolving health and safety issues.
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and IT systems.
