Zachary Daniels is working exclusively retained with Metacarpal to recruit an experienced Design & Manufacturing Engineer based at the National Robotarium in Edinburgh.

Metacarpal are a fast developing, multi-award winning R&D company developing what is thought to be the world's first mechanical bionic hand.

What makes them unique compared to competitors is that they are designing a bionic hand that is entirely powered and controlled through body motion. This means no electronics. This point of difference is Metacarpal's strongest asset, as they can offer greater functionality, reliability and robustness at a lower cost and weight. They have tested their prototypes with potential customers internationally and are received glowing feedback. They have ambitious growth plans to expand quickly across North America and then the rest of the world.

Reporting directly to the company CEO, the successful candidate will be involved in various projects, ranging from quality improvements to introducing new technologies. The work at Metacarpal has true meaning, impacting the lives of users, enabling them to complete activities of daily living faster and more effectively than other devices, whilst also boosting their confidence This will be a rewarding and extremely interesting position, with fantastic career prospects.

Responsibilities:

  • Design verification and testing
  • Building the assembly process and implementing it with incoming technicians
  • Implementing design changes for FMEA and DFMA through design reviews
  • Creating manufacture drawings and quality specifications
  • Liaising with the supply chain to understand their requirements and feed this into the design process
  • Tolerance analysis

Design of new parts and products including:

  • Involvement in brainstorming, designing and prototyping of products as well as test equipment
  • CAD modelling, 3D printing, and testing
  • Setting up and optimising an assembly line

Experience Required:

  • Knowledge & experience in mechanical design
  • Significant practical experience (3-5 years) and / or Bsc Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Commercial and budget awareness / experience with controlling the costs of a project
  • Capable of managing projects/work packages/ technicians (future responsibility)
  • Full understanding of relevant engineering and quality standards (ISO 13485 preferred)
  • 3D CAD experience in Solid Works
  • Experience in more than one phase of the engineering life cycle, with sufficient experience of the total life cycle to ensure a good understanding of adjacent phases and through-life engineering issues
