Crime Investigator PIP 2

We are currently recruiting for experienced PIP 2 investigators to work for Sussex Police at their Worthing Police Station.

This is a temporary role until September 2025 initially with a view of being extended there after.

PLEASE NOTE DUE TO POLICE VETTING CRITERIA YOU MUST HAVE RESIDED WITHIN THE UK CONTINUOUSLY FOR AT LEAST 5 YEARS AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.

JOB PURPOSE - To work as a member of the Outside Enquiry Team within the Surrey & Sussex MCT dealing with Operation Bramber

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Diligently and expeditiously undertake any enquiry or task allocated in the course of a major crime investigation, as directed by a Detective Supervisor, ensuring compliance with Sussex and Surrey Police policies and procedures
  • Meet with relevant victims of and witnesses to crime with a view to securing and preserving evidence for use in any subsequent inquiry. Ensure that victims and witnesses are updated with the progress of the investigation and are provided with any necessary support and protection. Victim contact will be via liaison with Family Liaison Officers (FLO)
  • Prepare for and complete interviews and written witness and victim statements, ensuring that statements are accurate, legible, concise, and that they satisfy the required evidential quality standards and are compliant with Crown Prosecution Service guidelines
  • Prepare for and undertake formal investigative interviews of suspects under caution, in compliance with the provisions of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, preparing and delivering relevant disclosure material during the process as necessary and required.
  • Ensure that evidence is gathered in compliance with the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and with Force policies and procedures, and to secure and preserve the continuity of all evidence and exhibits as necessary and required.
  • Ensure that all relevant unused material is identified and recorded in compliance with the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996.
  • Undertake the authorised search of premises connected with an investigation as necessary and required, and to seize, secure and preserve any relevant evidential exhibits, ensuring compliance with all statutory and procedural provisions.
  • Attend court as necessary and required to give evidence in relation to any aspect of the investigation which the post holder has personal knowledge of, or in which the post holder has had any involvement. This will include preparing and submitting case files to HM Coroner for use in the Coronial process, and to attend and give evidence at any relevant Inquest as necessary and required.
  • Actively identify evidence and/or intelligence gathering opportunities, to highlight these opportunities to colleagues, and to take the appropriate course of action as necessary and required. Make accurate and timely submissions of actionable intelligence via the Force intelligence systems.
  • Make positive contributions to operational briefings, providing relevant and concise updates to other members of the team in order to add value to the investigative process

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • PIP level 1 or equivalent experience in conducting criminal investigations
  • PIP 2 qualification or the ability to achieve this within 18 months of appointment - subject to training availability. *NB: Failure to achieve the PIP 2 qualification will lead to formal procedures to remove the post holder from the role
  • Possession of current full UK Driving Licence.
  • A pass in the National Investigators Exam
  • PEACE interview trained, or willing to undertake this training in order to to become proficient
  • Ability to achieve Tier 3 Advanced Witness Interviewer and Advanced Suspect Interviewer qualifications, if not already held.
  • Substantial, proven and well evidenced experience in criminal investigation, conducting interviews and case building
  • Proven ability to analyse problems, make sound operational decisions and have a high level of persistence and self-motivation to see an investigation through to conclusion
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the confidence and ability to negotiate and influence others through verbal and written communication
  • Must be capable of absolute discretion in handling matters of a personal, sensitive and confidential nature.
  • Ability to independently exercise own judgement in a consistent manner, within confines of legislation and agreed procedures
  • Ability to interpret information quickly and effectively in order to select the right course of action.
  • Excellent organisational, planning and prioritising abilities.
  • Demonstrates confidence, credibility and resilience together with the ability to work under pressure, take a methodical approach and meet competing deadlines.
  • Able to operate multiple computer database systems and be willing to undertake training in order to become proficient in all relevant Surrey and Sussex Police systems;
  • Must be willing and able to be flexible with working time and place of work, and on occasions, to be prepared to work unplanned overtime.
  • The post holder must be capable of passing and maintaining the Force enhanced vetting procedure.
  • The post holder must be subject of a Psychiatric Assessment as to suitability to perform the role - due to the distressing nature of the investigations undertaken by the Major Crime Team and agree to undertake further assessments as necessary
