As part of the SSEN Transmission Pathway to 2030 programme of works, we have a number of Overhead Lines Project Engineering opportunities to support its delivery, including Senior Engineer, Project Engineer and Assistant Project Engineer Levels. No prior OHL design experience is required for the Assistant Project Engineer role.

The roles advertised would sit within SSEN Transmission's Project Engineering team with a primary focus on AC Overhead Lines systems and specific experience with transmission networks would be desirable. We encourage candidates with a project engineering background, ideally with 132kV and above voltage overhead line engineering background in either contractor, consultancy, or client organisations within the Energy Industry to apply. For Assistant Overhead Line Project Engineer positions, candidates from other industries would also be considered, with good transferable skills and willingness to learn the role.

The key duties & responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide overhead line engineering support for major 400kV, 275kV and 132kV projects across the full project life cycle, working as part of a multidiscipline project engineering team. Candidates with knowledge of overhead line design software, like PLS CADD, would be preferred.
  • To take on a Lead Project Engineering role on some Projects, leading on engineering governance, co-ordination of all Engineering Disciplines and support/assist others in the project team around managing engineering risks and utilising opportunities for the project to excel.
  • Act as the point of contact for overhead line engineering and represent engineering at key strategic, commercial, programme and site project meetings.
  • Promote and manage safety within the assigned projects through the implementation of CDM procedures and practices, ensuring the project engineering is compliant with company, HSE and industry regulations.
  • Work closely with Engineering Managers and Project Managers to ensure that Engineering and Quality risks are identified and mitigated.

What do I need?

To be considered for these roles, we would love you to have:

  • Self-Starter attitude, who enjoys problem solving and have the ability to explore design options and apply technical, evidence-based rigour to assess the best solution.
  • Good communication and organisational skills, with the ability to demonstrate diligence, prioritise workload, and deliver messages and information at the appropriate level both up and down the management structure.
  • Demonstrable technical skills in Overhead line development, design and specification or demonstrable transferable skills and experience. (for Engineer/ Senior Engineer role).
  • Previous experience of overhead line engineering, leading a technical team through both the development and delivery stages, supporting/ training the project team to address technical queries and reviewing the technical reports. (For Senior Engineer role).
  • A technical degree or HND, with strong demonstrable relevant technical experience.

Candidates meeting the above requirements but lacking the Overhead Line experience can be offered an Assistant OHL Engineer role with the ability to transition to an OHL Project Engineer role once the necessary experience has been gained.
