Marine Technician

As a Marine Technician you will support Marine Maintenance Artificer in the development, maintenance, and future proofing of the Ports marine vessel fleet. Ensure the effective operation of the Ports vessel fleet and Aids to Navigation without compromising standards, safety, and reliability. Fulfil key roles required by business activities and departments in support of Port plans.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible to the Marine Maintenance Artificer in assisting with the full maintenance support to the Ports Marine Vessel Fleet to support the Ports operational requirements.
  • To maintain the Ports Marine Vessels as required in supporting the Ports operational requirements.
  • Co-ordinate work through external agencies, as required by line management.
  • Maintain Aids to Navigation & vessel stores and carry out monthly stores holding audits.
  • Program and refurbish navigation light stock in readiness for deployment to navigation buoys and beacons.
  • Carry out day to day marine vessel maintenance of the Ports vessel fleet, to include current and future fleet projects.
  • Assist engineering line management with marine vessel inspections and audits as necessary.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Authority's marine pollution vessels & equipment as required.
  • Undertake marine vessel administration as required, including documenting, and recording all maintenance events using the Ports maintenance systems.
  • Complete all equipment inspections and checks as prescribed in the Ports policy and procedural documentation, including production, and recording accurate documentation.
  • Liaise with internal business areas in relation to all marine vessel work, as required by line management.
  • Attend courses as necessary and on request by line management to always provide role competence and compliance.
  • Use and comply with procurement systems in relation to the procurement of parts, spares, and associated equipment to gain best value.
  • Assist line management in maintaining accurate parts, spares, and equipment records.
  • Willingly share knowledge and expertise to develop others and contribute to Port business & strategy policies.
  • Ensure all equipment and tools are maintained in a good state of repair and accurately accounted for, inspected, and documented.
  • Proactively seek to develop personal skills in line with company role requirements and changes in technology and policy.
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by engineering line management.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential:

  • High level of experience in working on marine diesel engines and small commercial vessel systems.
  • Hold a relevant engineering qualification to level 3 or above.
  • Time served vessel maintenance experience, or suitable equivalent.
  • Understanding of the MCA Small Commercial Vessels & Pilot Boat (SCV) Code.
  • Previous experience of working in a workshop environment.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to read, translate and understand technical drawings.
  • Good level of engineering fault-finding experience.
  • Current drivers licence category BE.
  • Good level of Computer literacy
  • Good communication skills

Desirable:

  • MCA Pollution 2P Qualification.
  • Demonstrated ability in repairs and maintenance to low voltage electrical and electronic circuits.
  • Previous experience of the installation, maintenance, and repair to aids to navigation (AtoN).
  • Current First Aid certificate.
  • Material Handler/crane drivers' licence.
  • Demonstrated ability in repairs and maintenance to low voltage electrical and electronic circuits.
  • Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Proficiency.
  • Vessel handling qualifications.
  • An aspiration to develop in role and progress in time.

Additional position specifics:

  • The position is based in the Milford Haven Port Authority at Gorsewood Drive.
  • Incumbents are required to live within a 30 mile, or 1 hours travel time of Milford Haven.
  • Incumbents must comply with health and safety legalisation and the Ports other Policies & Procedures.
  • Incumbents will be part of the Authority's callout arrangements.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • This job will involve working outside in inclement weather and some out of hours/call out working based on a rota system.
  • The position may involve a role in marine pollution exercises, training courses and emergency response.
  • The position may involve overnight travel away from Milford Haven.
