About the Role

Salary: £63,000 - £94,400 + car /car allowance + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing, and family.

SSEN Transmission is at the heart of the just transition to net zero in the UK. In the coming years, our network will be pivotal in connecting and transporting the power needed to decarbonise the UK's electricity network and in doing so power the UK's net zero ambition. Our business is rapidly growing, to deliver the largest investment package that Scotland's electricity system has ever seen, with a projected investment programme of over £20bn in the next 10 years.
As Senior Manager, Energy Futures at SSEN Transmission, you are the custodian of SSEN Transmission's investment drivers (renewable generation and others) which underpin the strategic planning of the electricity transmission system to achieve net zero whilst maintaining safe secure supplies of electricity to consumers. Your role is to develop credible future energy insights and scenarios aligned with Government policy and ambitions. These will form a critical part of long-term strategic network development plans.
This role will report to our Director of Strategic Energy Planning sitting in the Business Planning and Commercial directorate.
The responsibilities of the Senior Manager, Energy Futures include:
- Support and develop a team of policy analysts, specialist power system engineers and data analytics modellers to develop future energy scenarios and insights, through research and analysis to model the short-term pathway (<10 years) and long-term scenarios (10-50 years) and inform the development of future energy scenarios to determine the potential need for GB electricity transmission.
- Build and maintain a database of energy users' archetypes that comprise dynamic energy profiles of import and export for all major technologies and consumer groups, whilst gathering data and evidence to understand their behaviours and market conditions that impact supply and demand.
- Establish strong and trusted relationships with key stakeholders relevant to SSEN Transmission's system planning including Governments, regulators, statutory consultees, consumer groups, other network companies, supply chain and technology providers, and other relevant parties / experts; and leverage these relationships to maintain a close awareness of any potential factors that would impact on our system plans to make informed recommendations for change.
- Undertake stakeholder engagement on the future energy scenarios and energy insights, including with consumers, generators, disruptive technology providers, statutory authorities, regulators, supply chain, academics etc.
- Utilising your wide network of contacts and collaborative relationships, to develop SSEN Transmission's credibility in the national policy debate about the energy system to achieve legislated net zero targets demonstrating subject matter expertise.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- Experience of the analytical and organisational techniques for scenarios development, including medium to long term (5-10 years) sectoral foresighting, and implementation.
- Demonstrable ability to technically assess issues/problems and critically assess and prioritise a range of technical solutions, using this information to develop robust scenarios to engage and influence the future of the transmission network.
- Detailed knowledge of the GB energy industry structure including markets, economics of transmission investment and networks regulatory framework, including our Licence Obligations and Industry Codes/Standards for the design of, and connections to the transmission network.
- Knowledge and understanding of the interfaces with Ofgem, other network companies and the Electricity System Operator.
- Proven capabilities in team development, naturally coaching and mentoring to deliver outstanding performance and a positive, inclusive culture.
