Markets Operative

We are looking for a Markets Operative to work on an interim basis with Bristol City Council for an initial period of 6 months.

20 Hours Per Week (Market Open 7 Days a week from November – Christmas)

£12.38 Per Hour (PAYE) or £15.14 Per Hour (Umbrella)

Operational Role covering Saturday Market Days

The Job:

  • Carry out and range of cleaning, waste disposal and recycling tasks. Operate mechanical cleaning equipment.
  • Unlock, lock and secure premises and open space sites. Operate building security and fire alarm systems.
  • Provide an on-site security presence to address anti-social behaviour and crime issues.
  • Provide information and general assistance to customers, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Set up, move, and dismantle market and event equipment. Provide general porterage services for market traders and event organisers. Operate mechanical handling equipment.
  • Carry out minor repairs and maintenance to buildings, infrastructure, and equipment.
  • Operate evacuation and emergency procedures in instance of fire, bomb alert or other potential hazards. Liaise with emergency services.
  • Although post holders will normally carry out their duties between Monday to Saturday. Saturday working will be required. There will be occasions when the market is open on Sundays (the Market becomes a 7 day a week operation from mid-November until Christmas) and evenings and post holders will be required to work as part of a rota to cover these occasions.
  • Always Wear uniform and protective clothing when on duty.
  • Work in accordance with market trading, event, and security legislation. Undertake training to meet these requirements.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Previous experience in a related capacity - indoor or outdoor markets, events, or public open space site management
  • Demonstrable experience of working with minimum supervision.
  • Be able to carry out various manual handling and heavy lifting tasks.
  • Experience in use of mechanical equipment, hand tools, materials, and cleaning products.
  • Have a flexible approach to working days and hours. Saturday working will be required. There will be occasions when the market is open on Sundays (the Market becomes a 7 day a week operation from mid-November until Christmas) and evenings and post holders will be required to work as part of a rota to cover these occasions.
