Position: Mechanical Engineer

Location: King's Lynn

Contract Type: Permanent (Full-Time)

Hours: 40 hours per week (Monday - Thursday 0700 hrs to 1600 hrs with half an hour unpaid lunch break and Friday 0700 hrs to 1300 hrs)

Salary: £TBC Per Annum (depending on experience)

Reporting to: Mechanical Supervisor

Palm Paper Limited (PM7) is the UK site for the Palm Group based in King's Lynn, manufacturing graphic papers. PM7 is the widest, largest and most powerful newsprint machine in the world with the capacity to produce 400,000 metric tonnes of newsprint, improved newsprint and magazine grades per annum.

Palm Recycling Limited also based at PM7 is responsible for suppling Palm Paper Limited with the required waste paper. Carrying out collections and recycling services for the public sector and for commercial clients.

Production, sales, logistics and finance for the UK site for both Palm Paper Limited and Palm Recycling Limited is all run from PM7.

Job overview:

Main responsibilities:

  • Ensure PPM's are completed to schedules set by Mechanical Supervisor for the area.
  • Completing work orders issued to them from their supervisor in a safe and timely manner, also updating work orders on the system and in person on completion.
  • Reacting to day-to-day issues within the specific area of responsibility and only seeking assistance from above if extra knowledge and experience on the issue is required.
  • Regular communication to all levels on work progress.
  • Support to direct Supervisor and attending meetings as required.
  • Complete end of day checks in and around the mechanical workshop to ensure all cupboards are locked up, bins emptied, tools stored away and carry out general housekeeping duties.
  • In case of any faults/break downs occurring during standard operation time, react accordingly and carry out troubleshooting/fault finding in co-operation with your workforces for preventing any interruptions of the manufacturing process so that the downtime of all relevant equipment and machinery will be as low as possible.
  • Co-ordination and accomplishment of mechanical maintenance and repair work of all equipment, installations and machinery at the premises of Palm Paper in co-operation with the superior and the workforces.
  • Ensure that all goods in parts are dealt with in a timely manner and either booked in or organised for a specific shutdown task.
  • Support the Mechanical Engineering Supervisor with planning and accomplishing of related projects.
  • Maintain all required records, documents and certification.
  • Carry out overhauls of equipment in a modern mechanical workshop.
  • Carry out weld repairs to plant pipework.
  • Conduct pump changes; roll changes and general heavy mechanical works within a team of trained and experienced mechanical engineers.
  • On call service in case of breakdowns in accordance to company procedures and policies for the agreed on call plan.
  • The jobholder may be required to carry out additional tasks as instructed by the Head of Mechanical Engineering and/or his/her deputy.

Specific responsibilities:

  • The Mechanical Engineer is workshop based and will be issued with a full set of tools to enable them to carry out the tasks given.
  • Assist in the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment and ensure that all equipment is used in accordance with H&S regulations and company rules.
  • Use resources as efficient as possible and ensure that all activities will be done in compliance with all legal regulations for environmental protection.
  • The jobholder is requested to keep the process-related housekeeping standard for all equipment and installations at the highest level. Specific required housekeeping actions could be requested at any time (e.g. cleaning of chests, tanks, heat recovery installation, floors, framing, etc.) or could be done on one's own initiative.

Knowledge, skills and experiences required:

  • Mechanical Engineering apprenticeship or similar.
  • A minimum of five years' experience in a Mechanical Engineering position.
  • Ideally, experience with fork trucks, MEWPS (mobile elevating work platforms) overhead cranes, confined spaces, welding and machining.
