Highways Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Highways Engineer to help develop and oversee delivery of a wide range of projects from sustainable travel schemes to major road network projects.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Manage and ensure the successful delivery of diverse projects, including sustainable travel initiatives and major road network projects.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and preliminary designs for projects, from initial concept through to business case submission.
  • Ensure that design and construction activities adhere to approved plans and relevant legislation.
  • Request and analyse surveys, perform site investigations, conduct risk assessments, and compile pre-construction information.
  • Develop public consultation materials and participate in consultation events.
  • Prepare reports for Committee and Cabinet Members, along with supporting documentation.
  • Commission, review, and process temporary, experimental, and permanent traffic regulation orders.
  • Oversee junior staff assisting with these tasks.

Qualifications and Certifications:

  • HNC or similar level qualification in Civil Engineering or other relevant field plus evidence of continuing professional development
  • Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers or other relevant professional organisation or willingness to work towards such Membership
  • Driving licence

Skills and Attributes:

  • Good time management skills, with ability to prioritise work and manage a number of tasks concurrently
  • Experience of successfully supervising, managing, or guiding staff or willingness to do so
  • Excellent inter-personal skills and the ability to work on your own initiative and contribute to the wider team
  • Experience of successfully dealing with enquiries & complaints from the public
  • Experience of conducting traffic, transport, policy or planning related studies including commissioning surveys and analysing data
  • Knowledge of the legislation associated with highways, traffic and transportation
  • Working knowledge of construction health and safety legislation and associated regulations relevant to highways, traffic and transportation schemes
  • Experience in the feasibility, design, or construction stages of highway improvement schemes
  • Experience or willingness to learn use of AutoCAD and CAD standards
  • Experience or willingness to learn use of AutoTrack, Key Signs and Key Lines or similar software
