Japanese speaking Assistant Director

Our client specialising in Japanese news services is looking for a Japanese-speaking Assistant Journalist.

You will work in a small team to help report on news, business and feature stories around Europe for a national broadcaster in Japan. This is a great opportunity to be involved in all stages of TV news production whilst working in a Japanese-speaking environment.

Experience and knowledge of news and broadcasting is helpful, but willingness and ability to learn will go a long way, coupled with an ability to think creatively about how to make a good visual news story.

An active interest in European current affairs is essential, organizational skills and an ability to thoroughly research a subject are important. As work will involve travel in Europe, proficiency in one or more European languages would be advantageous. Japanese language skills/experience is necessary and the ability to think about what would interest a Japanese audience is crucial.

SALARY: £30k

WORKING HOURS: Monday to Friday

LOCATION: Central London

Japanese speaking Assistant Director Responsibility:

  • Conduct Japanese-English translations of English articles
  • Gathering and summarising information on daily news and emergency bulletins
  • Dictation from tape (or recorded materials) of press conference or interviews and simple editing work
  • Acting as technical assistant for TV news and news programme production
  • Arranging and assisting with equipment on location
  • Accompanying press conferences and interviews with specialist/artists in different sectors in society, politics, finance, and entertainment
  • Willingness to accompany the programme on location
  • Possibility of travelling to various countries, mainly in Europe
  • Possibility of working on weekend if necessary

Japanese speaking Assistant Director Ideal Candidate:

  • Business level of MS Word and Excel, as well as other IT-related skills
  • Basic knowledge of camera and editing software (Premier, Photoshop, etc.) is welcome; training will be provided
  • Native level English language and business level Japanese language (JLPT N2 or above) is essential
  • Strong interest in current affairs, media, and production work in a Japanese cultural environment
  • Physically fit, motivated and able to frequently travel all around the UK and Europe
