Contract type: Permanent, Full or Part-Time hours

Location: Liverpool, hybrid working 1 day per week in the office (although we would also be open to our other office locations)

Professional Indemnity Team at Keoghs

Our Professional Indemnity team in Liverpool are looking to recruit a qualified solicitor/ FILEX. The team has an excellent reputation. It is ranked highly in both Chambers and Legal 500.

The successful individual will work closely with the partners in the team on high value and multi-party claims, as well as running smaller value claims themselves. There are excellent opportunities for professional development, client interaction & secondments with insurers as well as developing on to deal with their own high value, complex claims over time.

The team handles claims against many different types of professionals including engineers, architects, surveyors, solicitors, accountants, brokers, IFAs and veterinary surgeons as well as defending the professionals in disciplinary proceedings before their professional bodies. In addition the team deals with policy coverage advice and disputes in professional indemnity matters and also across other classes of insurance. The workload is therefore wide and varied and will cover claims when they are handled through the pre-action protocol, at ADR and through litigation and arbitration. The role requires both technical and communication skills.

The role:

The successful lawyer will work closely with the existing members of the Professional Indemnity team and will be accountable for the following:

  • Reviewing documents and preparing reports
  • Handling your own smaller matters
  • Liaising with the Insured and Insurers
  • Dealing with disclosure
  • Reviewing evidence
  • Conducting investigations
  • Instructing Counsel/Experts
  • Research
  • Drafting generally
  • Attending conferences and trials/ disciplinary hearings with Counsel
  • Dealing with routine correspondence
  • Court appointments
  • Ensuring compliance with the SRA Code of Conduct and relevant Service Standards
  • Taking part in seminars/ training for insurer clients

What you'll have:

Essential:

  • Previous litigation and professional indemnity experience or policy coverage - whether through experience in role or perhaps a seat during a training contract
  • A knowledge and understanding of the types of disputes handled by the department and claims handled by the department's insurer clients
  • An ability to prioritise workload
  • An ability to communicate in writing and prepare succinct and concise reports
  • Ability to pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work with case management systems
  • The personal skills to deal with such work as major and expensive litigation involving liaison with senior claims handlers
  • Legal qualification required i.e. Solicitor / FILEX or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Previous defendant insurance and professional indemnity experience
