Paddlesport Guide

Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a qualified paddlesport instructor who is enthusiastic about providing high levels of customer service to deliver outstanding kayak and stand up paddleboard tours and experiences.

This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year. You'll work 390 hours over the duration of the contract and on average, you'll work 4 days per week but again, this will be flexible depending on operational demand. You'll be required to work weekends and some evenings, more details regarding the hours will be discussed at interview.?

Internally you'll be known as a Active Outdoors Development Co-ordinator.

You'll join a small, lively and enthusiastic team that are passionate about Birmingham's complex tapestry of stories.?Our kayak and SUP tours are engaging and interactive and mainly focus on the experience of kayaking and paddleboarding, with a sprinkle of history along the way.

Our unique site in the centre of the city backs onto Birmingham's canals, providing an easy transition from the storeroom to the water. All guests will check in with our Visitor Centre team and complete consent forms in advance of their experience. You'll then conduct safety briefings and paddle instructions before taking the group out onto their tour. For more information on the tours and experiences, please visit https://things-to-do.

What you'll be doing

Based at the Roundhouse, you'll welcome visitors of all ages and abilities, and make them feel safe and comfortable to enjoy their activity. You'll conduct safety briefings and teach paddle basics to all guests before assisting them onto the water for their experience. Your tour will be engaging, informative and professional, and you'll convey the history of Birmingham's canals and the local area. You'll confidently navigate Birmingham's waterways, being respectful of other users such as narrowboats, working boats and wildlife. We have a small team of Paddlesport Guides (staff, freelance and volunteers) and there will be opportunities to work together as well as working independently.

When not with guests, you'll ensure all safety and equipment checks have been completed. Most kayak experiences take place Friday-Sunday, with occasional Wednesday's and Thursday's.

All paddle equipment will be provided, as will the historical content for you to learn. You'll be required to hold a minimum of a British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor qualification.

To deliver this role successfully, you'll:

  • hold a minimum of a British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor qualification
  • be someone who is confident in building customer relationships quickly and feel comfortable with talking to lots of different people from different backgrounds
