Canvassers (Casual Hours)

Join Southwark Council as a Casual Canvasser for Household Canvass 2024! Are you ready to be part of a team that plays a vital role in maintaining democracy in Southwark? This is a great opportunity to work flexibly in your local community, meet new people, and make a real difference for our residents!

As a Canvasser, your main responsibility will be to support the Electoral Services team to compile a complete and accurate Electoral Register during the Annual Canvass process. You will visit residential properties, collect registration information, and provide advice to residents about voter registration. This is also an opportunity to engage with your community and represent a positive image of the Council.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Making personal visits to households within a designated area to obtain Household Enquiry Forms (HEF) and Invitations to Register (ITR).
  • Advising residents on the importance of responding to the registration process.
  • Recording information about household responses and any changes in property status.
  • Managing your workload efficiently to complete all visits within the given timescale.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and handling personal information securely at all times.

Canvassing takes place over a three-to-four-week period from 28th of September to the 20th of October 2024. You will have the flexibility to work in your own time, including evenings and weekends.

About You:

We are looking for individuals who possess:

  • Good numeracy, literacy, and IT skills, with experience using a hand-held tablet device.
  • A confident warm approach to engaging with residents and building their trust.
  • Basic knowledge of GDPR legislation and electoral registration processes.
  • Experience in a customer service environment, engaging with the public, meeting deadlines, and delivering results.
  • Effective time management, organisational, and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently, tactfully, and professionally, maintaining a politically neutral manner.
  • You will be provided with a tablet, charger, and personal safety device, which must be returned at the end of the canvassing period.

Our commission-based pay structure rewards your efforts and achievements:

Payments

In-person training: £25.00

Property responses:

Doorstep response: £2.50 per response
Online, telephone or text response: £1.50 per response
Information indicating a property is unoccupied or inaccessible: 50p per response

New voter registrations:

Doorstep registration: £2.50 per successful registration
Online registration: £1.50 per successful registration

Canvass Timetable

In-person training, collect equipment and sign contract/risk assessment: W/C 23rd of September (Dates TBC)
Personal door knock stage: Saturday 28th of September - Sunday 20th of October
Return equipment: Friday 25th of October
Payment: 20th of December
