Job Overview

To lead on and provide advice, support, deliver health and safety advice to the Business on how to protect the health, safety and welfare of employees in the workplace and to be the responsible named officer for maintaining health and safety requirements. They identify hazards and carry out assessments of risk. They also monitor working conditions and the effective application of risk controls, including helping management to ensure that all employees follow the rules regarding health and safety.

Responsibilities

  • To promote and work with managers in determining safe working practices, ensuring that all service areas have suitable and sufficient risk assessments for their operations and activities.
  • To maintain up to date knowledge of current and new legislative requirements, relating to health and safety issues, to interpret, evaluate and advise management on the implications of such legislation on service delivery.
  • To implement and maintain all safety legislation within the business on topics such as COSHH, DESEAR, PUWER, Manual handling, Working at height etc.
  • Undertake planned health and safety audits and workplace inspections, operation or activity to audit compliance with regulations and procedures. This shall include the provision of reports to highlight where risk assessments and technical input and remedial actions are required.
  • Liaise closely with Managers regarding matters of concern in connection with specialist risk assessments and training and support requirements.
  • To ensure general administration of the Health and Safety service is carried out in an accurate and timely manner.
  • To maintain, review and revise first aid, Mental first aid, Fire Marshal, Spill team arrangements, organising appropriate training as necessary.
  • To coordinate monthly Health and Safety Committee meetings.
  • To hold monthly Health and Safety management meeting with agenda for stats and plan for business.
  • To provide support, advise and facilitate training on employees' health and safety responsibilities, including induction, assorted Health and Safety awareness training.
  • Carry out investigations of all Near misses, incidents and accidents and recommend measures to prevent recurrence.
  • To implement and sustain Safety F1rst program with 6 golden rules for the business to follow.

Qualifications

  • Training will be given to the individual who is carrying out this role.
  • IOSH (Three-day course)
  • NEBOSH (Held at a College)

Experience

  • Experience within operational areas is an advantaged but not essential.
  • Background in Quality Inspection FMCG
  • Want to transfer to Health & Safety Officer

  • Ability to learn and implement Health and Safety measures and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Basic level of literacy and numeracy.

Summary

Reporting to the Factory Manager, The HSO will have no direct line management responsibility. However, it should be clear: the HSO is a member of the management team and not an advisor, therefore their instructions are (subject to discussions with relevant staff) to be implemented.
